Has anyone heard anything about when the 2nd Edition of the brigade-level Fire and Fury ACW rules will be available? I thought I had read somewhere that they would be out sometime this summer, but there doesn't seem to be anything about them on Rich's website.

ACWBill15 Sep 2016 3:33 p.m. PST

Not far off. I would say Dec or Jan.

Last I talked to Rich, it will be after the New Year. Tax considerations, as I understand it.

Are they necessary? First edition was pretty near brilliant!

CATenWolde16 Sep 2016 1:19 a.m. PST

As above, they seem to be slated for an early January release.

As to whether the new edition is necessary, well, of course not in the strictest sense. However, having played several playtest games with the new version, I can tell you that I consider them a real upgrade across the board, and just making them available again in print is a plus.

Cheers,

Christopher

Any news on what the changes are likely to be?

coopman16 Sep 2016 4:22 a.m. PST

Yea, come on Christopher. Sing like a canary!

CATenWolde17 Sep 2016 2:52 a.m. PST

Okay – canary singing commencing! ;)

To start with the appearance, the design and trade dress seem similar to that of the RF&F book, so I'm sure it will be a beautiful but functional volume, as you would expect. There are extensive and clear descriptions of the rules, diagrams, and examples, and some helpful advice.

In general, a lot of the granularity from RF&F has been ported over, tweaked for scale of course, but without playing time. This includes finer gradations in the Maneuver table and Fire table (where effects vary by quality of the target), a much expanded system to rate troops (4 experience/quality ratings, 4 morale ratings), and also to rate various weapon types, both small arms and artillery. So, instead of things like the CSA generally having fewer rifled guns and often suffering from faulty fuses being hard coded into a generic firepower rating, you can now assign a battery various types of guns (similar or mixed) and use the optional Faulty Fuses modifier if you think it is appropriate. Likewise, for troops, you can rate a worn out Veteran brigade as Unreliable and put it up against a Green brigade that is Spirited, and the differences will be there on the tabletop in simple but meaningful ways.

The three included scenarios are from different battles at different stages of the war, and were chosen to be easier for the beginner to put on. There are also updates to the old scenario books, and at least one new scenario book, currently in the works.

There is also a nifty army generator system in the rules – I've rolled up a few armies and it works well, providing what you would expect for a given period in the war with the chance for some surprises. No points system – just rolling within a historical framework.

My veteran RF&F players found it easy to slide into, and my new/younger players really liked it – a big plus for me!

Cheers,

Christopher

i'll be picking these up as well.

I really enjoy RFF, so I'm sure BFF and I will be friends, especially if the same figures can be used for both games.

ACWBill28 Sep 2016 6:27 a.m. PST

I use my figures for both rules sets without issue. There are a few new markers in the regimental rules, but absolutely no re-basing is required.

Not yet. Rich has finished the book so it should not be long before it comes out. Best, Joel

thanks! I'm hoarding my pennies….

Charlie 1225 Apr 2017 6:40 p.m. PST

Per the Fire and Fury website forum, likely release date is July, in time for Hcon.

ACWBill28 Apr 2017 5:46 a.m. PST

The rules have been sent off to the printers after the addition of a few last items. It shouldn't be long now.
