Very interesting! If you also go to the Istanbul Military Museum near Taksim Square they also have a large diorama of the Siege with life-sized guns and manikins. They also have the Mehter Ottoman marching band giving performances most days of the week: link YouTube link |

When I was at the panorama, it seemed the city had fallen to a swarm of school children. The panorama is well worth the visit, also the military museum. And oh yes, the land walls. You can see why invaders stopped and stared at it for a day before deciding to attack – or just go away. Astounding to think that was built by a declining empire. |

My wife and I visited Constantinople for a week in 2009. The diorama had just opened. Well as a military buff and a committed Byzantinophile, I had to see this. A crazy cab ride from out hotel in Sultan Ahmet got us there. As we went up into the central viewing area, I scanned the crowd there and realized that we were the only tourists there. I pointed out to my wife that of all the males here, I (Greek-American) was the only one who would have been on the other side of the walls. I also pointed out that if there were as many defenders on the walls as the diorama showed, the Byzantines would have been marching on Adrianople rather than defending Constantinople. :-) Hopefully, the site of the diorama is now more built up as to get back to the Hotel we had to walk over a mile to the metro as no more cabs would come to the site. Anyway, it is well worth the visit of any military medievalist or history buff. Recommended. |
