"Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the most iconic pieces of science fiction ever. It's been adapted into live-action twice, with varying levels of success, but most fans agree no one has come close to getting it right yet. But maybe Denis Villeneuve can.

Villeneuve is the director of Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, and the upcoming Arrival. He's also directing Blade Runner 2 and, in a new interview, told Variety he's always dreamed of remaking Dune…"

Much rather have someone adapt National Lampoon's Doon.

Lynch came way closer than that awful TV version to feel of Dune. To follow the book to the last, either you except the need for a multi hour film or do a series/mini series.

@Rich Bliss: I feel you. Loved that book (as much as I am a fan of Herbert's work, the pisstake works also).

From the red-in-red eyes of the beer-addict, to the quotes from the baron (strangling kittens, or musing on whether it is possible to get a fabric blacker than black for the bar upholstery).

I thought the TV series was much better than the movie. Lower budget but more faithful to the source material.

I've never seen the TV series but saw the movie when it was in theaters as a kid. I watched it again after I read the book years later and thought it was good, about as good as you could do for a feature length film.

It would be nice to see HBO or Amazon or Netflix do a complete season of a TV show with it and see how they could do.

Yeah, but the Lynch movie had those goofy sound weapons in it. While the Lynch movie looked really good, the scripting had much to be desired, to the point I was getting embarrassed watching it if someone else came in the room…

Yes, the TV miniseries was better, and the actor playing the Baron was better. What actually clinched it for me was the scenes where his "ghost" is talking to Alia in Children of Dune.

Damon.

I like the tv series too. The extend cut on dvd is really good.

I agree that the TV series was very faithful to the book than the movie. The movie has the larger impact due to exposure. The continuation of the book series after Herbert's death had bent the series visual descriptions to favor the film's visuals.

A miniseries would probably be the best treatment. Lynche's film was shown on TV using the deleted footage once. It looked awful but the story was much better. Lynch sued.

As Game of Thrones finishes whoever owns the Dune rights should be hawking them round the studios for a massive tv series. With the prequels and sequels Dune really is GoT in space. Or GoT is a fantasy Dune…

The TV mini-series was great! A much more faithful rendition of the story.

I've always been a HUGE fan of the Dune series of books. But I remember going to see Lynch's film version of Dune and being so disappointed I was embarrassed by it. I saw it with some friends who had not read the (at that time) Trilogy, and it was so confusing, I spent most of the time explaining the backstory of aspects of it to them! 2+ hours is simply NOT enough time to do that story justice.

I don't care WHO the director is, the story is too massive to be treated well in a single film. Now, if they were going to do a trilogy of films (like LOTR), that could work!?
