"Tom Hanks has had an impressive acting career spanning forty years. One of his most memorable roles was in Saving Private Ryan. He played a company commander who had to survive the carnage of the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach and then had to lead his men on a mission to save paratrooper and bring him home. Now, it appears that Hanks may be getting another World War 2 role.

Hanks wrote the screenplay for the new WWII movie "Greyhound," Aaron Schneider (Get Low) has been brought on to direct. Apparently, Hanks wants the starring role for himself…"

Isn't Hanks too old to play a destroyer captain? That's one thing I dislike about many movies is that the people who play soldiers are often 5-20 years older than they should be.

Ah, Tom Hanks, continuing his career arc of "guy you least want to go on a trip with"

Captain Phillips
Castaway
Sully
Apollo 13
Polar Express

It's called acting. If we went by these age limits on who can play what we wouldn't have ANY of John Wayne's military movies, or most anybody else's either. Enjoy the performance (which I'm sure will be great) and worry less about this sort of nonsense.

Yes Tom hanks and travel don't go together well

vicmagpa113 Sep 2016 1:33 p.m. PST

I do not know what everybody is talking about. His movies are of quality and sometimes groundbreaking. Thanks Amand! Looking forward to this and the next!

I read this as Star Destroyer, was disappointed when reading comprehension kicked in

Me too VonTed, me too. Though I'm not sure he'd be a very convincing Star Destroyer captain.

Looking forward to it.

I'm not a navy guy, but at the beginning especially, weren't older reserve officers given commands that normally given to younger men more recently thru the academy and OCS?

redbanner414513 Sep 2016 2:22 p.m. PST

A grandfatherly destroyer captain isn't near as silly as all those fat civil war reenactors we see in films.

Randall13 Sep 2016 2:33 p.m. PST

Out of curiosity, what was the age of destroyer captains?

Promotion in peacetime was generally slow for the regulars and doubly so in the reserves. It would not be unusual for a major warship captain (and in a navy chock full of literally ten thousand+ of auxiliary and lesser warships a DD was a major vessel) to be in their 50's. I think Halsey was 60 at the outbreak of WW2.

With the ramp up when war started were there former officers in reserve called up?

+1 on Star Destroyer reading.

Phil Hall13 Sep 2016 3:38 p.m. PST

You know you are a heroic Captain when Tom Hanks plays you in the movie.

mwindsorf when Glory was released one reviewer complained tha Matthew Broderick wasn't old enough to play part of Robert Gould Shaw. The laugh was on the reviewer. Broderick was two years older than Shaw at the time portrayed in the movie.

Another +1 on Star Destroyer. Most disappointed. I think the Empire is portrayed unfairly, and the hard working Star Destroyer captains need someone to show their sacrifice and dedication!

Gee, I guess that Humphrey Bogart in "The Caine Mutiny" was awful, and to think THAT was made right after the war when they should have known better.

wrgmr113 Sep 2016 5:16 p.m. PST

I really like Tom Hanks and think it will be good, looking forward to it. Thanks Armand!

Jeepers. I hope there aren't any girls in it. That would be icky.

StarCruiser13 Sep 2016 6:44 p.m. PST

Just about anything Tom touches seems to turn to gold…

He is quite literally today's Jimmy Stewart.

This one will e a must see. A naval film and Hanks, this is a good mixture.

I remember reading a review on Flyboys on TMP. The poster was complaining how bad and fake Jean Reno's French accent was. There was a dozen posts after it pointing out Jean Reno is a French actor and lived in France since he was a teenager. lol

Who asked this joker14 Sep 2016 5:19 a.m. PST

I am sure there were some more mature destroyer captains.

"Girls"

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Kate Winslet had signed as a reporter.

I'd be more concerned about the budget: 30-35 million. A lot to us,peanuts in Hollywood, especially for a Tom Hanks movie. Ryan was 70 million in 98. Of course, that was Spielberg. Hanks may be taking a pay cut,if this is a labor of love.

Expect lots of CGI, I guess.

I wonder what's happening with the Taffy 3 movie?

Charlie 1214 Sep 2016 3:10 p.m. PST

Winslet signed on to the Taffy 3 biopic 'Come Hell or High Water'. Last news (Oct 2015) on that is that they signed on a director.

Charlie 12--oh yeah,I got them mixed up.

They'll probably need to change the title.

monongahela16 Sep 2016 7:46 p.m. PST

I'd rather travel with Tom Hanks than stay with Angela Lansbury.

Old Contemptibles12 Oct 2016 9:23 p.m. PST

I always thought he would be perfect for the roll of Captain Becton of the USS Laffey (DD-724).
