Are there any new lines of 28mm Achaemenid Persians in "heroic" or more dynamic poses? |

The Foundry Casting Room ones? Some are quite dynamic, generally a very nice range. |

I've heard nothing yet, Colin. |

The Foundry Casting Room line look really nice! I was also happily surprised to see the Persian civilian pack. The Black Tree Designs figs also have some good poses that are more animated and could serve as some Persian "hero" types. It is interesting that the nobody does any Persian figs that are in heroic poses like their Greek counterparts. |

That's because in Greek art the Persians are always cringing and running away from the Greek heroes… |

I know that is how Persians are depicted in Greek art. However, for modern figure sculptors, I think we need to remember that the Persians created a large empire through military conquests. As such, there must have been some posturing on the part of some Persian bad a**es. |

Maybe we should petition Victrix to do some early/late Persians to match their Greeks? |

The miniature world of Martin Buck Facebook has images of allies. They may lost masters by Foundry. |

Xenophon, I meant my comment in a tongue-in-cheek mode. I actually agree that the Persian heroes get a raw deal from minis companies in terms of sculpts. IMO Foundry probably has the best current candidates. I wonder if the problem is partly a matter of limited historical/ archaeological records. In the parts where minis are made, Classical Greek references are the go-to sources. Herodotus names quite a few prominent Persians (and certainly doesn't treat them as weaklings!) and some of their exploits, but is thin on the descriptive details a sculptor would want. I expect the Persians wrote their own accounts, but I have no idea if any survived or have been translated. Archaeology done in Iran might reveal some stuff, but isn't very accessible these days. It is a shame that the Persians don't seem to have had their own equivalent of the Greek pottery drawing tradition – pottery is a great medium for preserving visual details! |

Mithridates, I think you correct, Victrix should complement their line with some good Persians as well. Pattus Magnus, I kind of thought you were commenting in a tongue in cheek mode. I know we are limited on our knowledge of Persian equipment but I don't know why sculptors cannot provide us with more "heroic" poses for Persians. Maybe Bronze Age Miniatures could do some up like their Greeks? |

If Victrix released plastic Persians I would be a very happy fellow. I'm in the middle of painting some of their Italian Allies figs and they are great! I have a bunch of the old Wargames Factory plastic Persians and they just aren't to the same level (adequate vs superior). In the meantime we have to make do with what we've got. I remember that when Great Escape Games released the Persian wars supplement for the Clash of Empires rules they had a limited release Persian warrior/hero figure on foot. No other Persian character figs on foot come to mind. Would Persian heroes have usually been cavalry? My understanding is that most of the nobles served as cavalry and that the infantry were mainly conscripts and levies from subject peoples – would they have had 'heroes' on foot at all? Maybe put one of the fancy Foundry Persian cavalrymen in with an infantry unit to represent the hero. The Immortals are a different matter, though – they should have a suitably heroic leader on foot… |

Victrix would undoubtedly do a great job with Persians. And it would fit in with their earlier Greek theme. Especially now that they have cavalry models out. However, it seems like they are going the Imperial Roman route for a while. But I agree, they could really do a good job and it would round out their collection very nicely by having various contingents of that empire. |

I'd second the Foundry Casting Room range. I picked up a few packs when I was last in Newark and they are very nice and probably as 'dynamic' as anything else out there. I'm hoping that they do release the rest of the Persian allies that Martin Buck did. I'm off to Newark again next week so will ask about them again and hopefully jolly them along….. |

Foundry today said no sign of the masters, yet- a pity! They are still on the lookout though. I picked up some more of the very nice Persian cavalry. |

Late to the party-- but this is my link to the Battlestandard figures I painted a while ago. The main point was to compare them to Newline Designs, and Vendel at the time. I found the Battlstandard figures to be big and bulky-- a bit thick-- but they did have some charisma which makes them interesting in a desert full of boring standard posed figures. They stick out!
