Hey all!

Well, the figure I wanted to use for Teresa FINALLY came in, and I was able to get the converting done (give her a rifle, get rid of the hat and give her hair, extend the sash, add a cross belt and cartridge box, give her her stiletto, etc) so finally… FINALLY… my second commission is done!

picture

Here it is. The gent I was doing it for allowed me to figure out the collection, and I figured I should include as many of the BIG regulars as made sense… Patrick Harper, Major Hogan, "Sweet" William Frederickson, Sharpe himself… did I miss any? I was really trying to do the "definitive" collection… I've seen a bunch online over the years, but really wanted to nail this one.

picture

I charged five bucks a figure, which I think is fair?

Anyway, please come on by and take a look at a LOT more photos, and input/feedback MORE than welcome!

They look good but the thing that lets them down for me is your eyes. They are too big and starey- more subtle eyes or merely a hint of shaded eye would look better.

At the moment they detract from the figures by leaping out at you.

Hope that helps

Mike

I like them

The eyes on a few figs are a bit prominent – I have found myself understating the eyes on my 28mm figs over the past few years

I think you have shown great imagination and I love to see any conversions. No one has yet done Liz Hurley mind you, as Sharpe presents his compliments. Now that would need some Greenstuff……..

The eyes?

Depends on the scale…but many would say do not even try to suggest eyes in anything at 28mm, or smaller.

Let me show Tsar Alexander from Westfalia….with nothing but a wash over the base skin flesh colour………..highlights and that was it;

picture

Now, for the same model, I tried to show eyes in the Cossack escort…and all I did was put in one black dot…no whites. The results? Awful …..They look like homicidal lunatics. Chap third in from the right still makes me laugh. Have you ever been on holiday in India/Egypt/Far East and suddenly think you need to pass wind? Then realise, to your horror, that you misinterpreted the message? That is his look;

picture

But above all…..never do eyes in horses. Unless blown to bits by canister, their whites do not show. Brown iris if you must, but black pupil and gloss varnish is all you need

Tough crowd!:) I can look at some of the eyes again… a few look pretty sharp, but a few might need tightening up. The horse for sure needs work!

Thanks for the feedback!

I like them, I think you might be selling yourself short, 5 dollars seems a bit cheap. As for the eyes, one thing I have noticed with photographing figures is that the eyes become much more prominent than when seen in the flesh.

Hey we did say we would give you a hard time!

It was only the eyes……

and it is so true that photography suddenly exaggerates them!
But much to admire here. The girl is particularly cleverly done, the leather reinforcement on the overalls, well done all round

Ragbones11 Sep 2016 1:25 p.m. PST

Lord Ashram, I think the figures look great.

Markconz11 Sep 2016 5:15 p.m. PST

Lovely work!

Lord A, your shading is really good. I agree with deadhead the young lady is great. The greens for the rifles is also very good.
The eyes do need some work. I never paint white on horses eyes, just a dark brown dot. The color of the Major Hogans face looks a tad grey to me, could just be the photo.
My suggestion $6.50 USD

Which figure is Teresa? What maker?

Gunner Dunbar11 Sep 2016 9:59 p.m. PST

Very nice, just about to post something similar.

Lord AShram – Sweet William was in the 60th Rifles, not the 95th.

Dexter Ward12 Sep 2016 2:51 a.m. PST

With eyes, less is more. Don't try and paint an eye shape.
A thin white line with a slightly wider brown/grey dot in the centre looks fine. And no whites on horse's eyes.
Easily fixed, anyway, by painting over most of the visible white bit – and worth fixing, as it spoils what is otherwise a very nice paint job.

Lord Ashram12 Sep 2016 3:56 a.m. PST

Yeah, I'll touch up the eyes a bit:)

Sweet William is in the uniform for the 60th… Main difference seems to be the red cuffs and collar.

Teresa is this figure:

picture

I just got rid of the hat, added a lot of hair (including a wild strand in front of her face) added a cross belt and cartridge box, a rifle to her hand, a sheathed stiletto to her belt, and extended the sash down a bit to get that bit of red on her. Wanted her to be a bit sexy and womanly, with the boobs, since it IS Sharpe, but also had to fix her up a bit.

Hogan looks okay in person, I think? I'll look again… The photos always make stuff look worse:). I was using a direct flash, which really illuminates the whites of the eyes, too…

We already agreed on a price, so five bucks it is! Whatever, it was fun to do, so even if it isn't a max profit that's fine:)

Lord Ashram12 Sep 2016 4:14 a.m. PST

Btw… Doing Teresa's hair with a gloss finish is dumb, right?

Gunner Dunbar12 Sep 2016 7:33 a.m. PST

Did you charge for conversions? I think $6 USD-$7 is about right for the paint job, add a little more for conversions, did you supply the figures? If so you have undercharged significantly.
As far as the eyes go, I do the eyes before I give the skin a wash, this way it tones down the White a little and is more forgiving of any mistakes in shape etc.

Lord Ashram12 Sep 2016 9:46 a.m. PST

Hey! Yeah, I didn't charge more for conversions or horses… I really just wanted to do the project, you know?:)

I did NOT supply the figures; I bought them, but the client is paying for the lead.

Yeah, I'll look at the eyes again… interesting, using the wash AFTER the white. That might help a bit. I swear they don't look that bad in person!:)

Brian Smaller12 Sep 2016 11:53 a.m. PST

Ahh – cuffs looked black on my screen. I should have know you would have got that right. Sorry!

Lion in the Stars12 Sep 2016 12:41 p.m. PST

Very nice work, but I'm sure you have more than a half hour per model invested.

Yeah, I think you're greatly underselling yourself.

Lord Ashram12 Sep 2016 2:42 p.m. PST

Oh, I'm sure I do, but honestly I just wanted the fun of doing the project, you know?

Gunner Dunbar12 Sep 2016 4:09 p.m. PST

Well, fun is what its about, if your not making a living from painting, charge whatever you feel comfortable with, and if the eye look ok in person, leave them, I personally think they look fine, but there seemed to be a bit of a conversion about them, so thought I would give some advice, photos never look as good as the figures in hand in my opinion.

Lord Ashram12 Sep 2016 7:52 p.m. PST

Here they are. Touched up a tiny bit…. in person I think they look fine. Sweet William is SUPPOSED to look a bit deformed. You ingrates.

:)

poiter5012 Sep 2016 8:44 p.m. PST

Ah, Teresa is a Eureka Minis figure from the Lady Pirates range. Thank you.
