In a recent survey – TMP link – most gamers said that lack of time was keeping them from starting a new period.

Do you anticipate doing more wargaming once you retire?

RittervonBek10 Sep 2016 6:39 a.m. PST

Oh yes

Whirlwind10 Sep 2016 6:40 a.m. PST

Yes

Already well retired and doing more gaming but less painting or starting new periods.

I anticipated more gaming but actually find I am doing less since I retired.

Jeigheff10 Sep 2016 7:04 a.m. PST

I hope so!

Timmo uk10 Sep 2016 7:06 a.m. PST

I don't expect to ever be able to retire.

jeffreyw310 Sep 2016 7:10 a.m. PST

That would be nice!

Pictors Studio10 Sep 2016 7:14 a.m. PST

I don't plan on retiring either. Although I get plenty of wargaming stuff done now.

vtsaogames10 Sep 2016 7:22 a.m. PST

I'm finding more time means going deeper into periods I already have, rather than new periods. Not saying I'm not tempted.

Hlaven10 Sep 2016 7:26 a.m. PST

Retired in June. i am painting more. my friend and his son and me and my son have been gaming several times a year. We are trying to game every other month now. Hope to game once a month soon. And my friend isn't even retired. i have several different projects i want to do and hope to start one soon. And i am sure like everyone else; i have been buying stuff over the years that i have never got to.

Ooh Rah10 Sep 2016 7:30 a.m. PST

Definitely planning on more gaming after retirement. Could be as soon as 16 months, but probably a few years longer.

JimDuncanUK10 Sep 2016 7:31 a.m. PST

I'm of the age group that is largely retired indeed I have been retired for 7 years. Unfortunately this same age group is the one that buries its chums more frequently than other age groups.

I certainly spend more time wargaming now than I did when I was working but I spend most of my time painting and building rather than playing. When I do play it is often solo although I could get some of my remaining chums around more than I do.

I don't go to my old club anymore, there's not much for me there, I have all the playing facilities I require at home and I don't have to drive through town to get to the club.

I still see most of my old club chums at various shows which I do attend fairly frequently, 9 or 10 shows a year. But then I am old man now, in my twilight years, dwindling energy resources and all that. I feel that I have been there, done that, still got the T-shirt.

I hope to continue to enjoy the hobby at my own pace while I can, so I do. I have ditched some of my old favourite periods and scales and have started new periods and scales. I might find a new favourite.

Hopefully I'll get a lot more gaming in post retirement

I expect to be too blind and arthritic to merely paint what I already have.

Bismarck10 Sep 2016 8:11 a.m. PST

Thanks to a TMP member who lives nearby and is "ressurecting" a local group of gamers and trying to build participation, my answer this year is a definite YES! Am gaming between once or twice a month. Prior years, before some health issues, it had basically been once or twice a year at a local convention held here in the state.

Painting, workbench efforts or even solo gaming has been nil, due to several reason. Hopefully with the weather cooling and if my stamina holds up will be able to "reclaim" my hobby room. So easy for that to over time become the room where everything goes that you dont have another place to put it. That should sound familiar to many of us. Vision limitations and time spent as a caregiver also have gotten in the way.

I'll end this by extending a hearty thanks to fellow TMPer
Chuckaroobob.

retirement, what is that

I hope so.

CorroPredo10 Sep 2016 8:20 a.m. PST

Well, since I retired in June, SWMBO has found much more chores for me to do. When people ask me how retirement is I usually say "I went from 3 days off a week to just one." I get to paint more because I do it late at night.

Rdfraf Supporting Member of TMP10 Sep 2016 8:45 a.m. PST

Hopefully yes!

Col Durnford10 Sep 2016 9:19 a.m. PST

I expect so.

As part of my pre-retirement I have been eliminating unused projects on eBay and reevaluating the lead mountain.

Mine is not near as large as some I have heard of, however, it's to large to every expect to get done.

Lucius10 Sep 2016 9:58 a.m. PST

I plan on getting to play every other month after retirement, which is still a ways off.

Although I still enjoy painting and gaming, there are other things that I value much more, as I've gotten older.

Yes

galvinm10 Sep 2016 10:27 a.m. PST

retired 10 years ago. You would think so. Alot more time for painting/building, but not much gaming. Thought after so many years in the military, I thought I would be home more often. I seem to spend more time away now, since the kids have grown and moved off, and I now have a 3 year old Granddughter. I have definately put a very large dent in the lead pile, but I never realized just how large that pile actually was. Still working on the mancave the wife bought me a few years ago, strictly for hobby purposes.

John Armatys10 Sep 2016 10:48 a.m. PST

I've been retired 3½ years, I'm running a lot more games and like galvinm working on the lead pile.

GarrisonMiniatures10 Sep 2016 10:56 a.m. PST

Retirement has been more a case of getting a pension rather than stopping work so… perhaps when the work dries up.

GarrisonMiniatures10 Sep 2016 10:59 a.m. PST

And my lead pile has just gone up by 4 elephants, 4 chariots and about 80 infantry. Thanks ebay.

raylev310 Sep 2016 11:03 a.m. PST

Yes. In fact an active wargaming community is a requirement for where I retire. Period. End of discussion.

And my wife understands. Seriously.

Phillius Sponsoring Member of TMP10 Sep 2016 11:14 a.m. PST

That's the plan.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP10 Sep 2016 11:32 a.m. PST

Been retired 10 years – do less gaming now than
ever, since wife became disabled. It can happen
as we grow older and then someone has to be
caregiver….

Bob the Temple Builder10 Sep 2016 11:42 a.m. PST

I spend more time doing wargame-related activity (writing rules, writing magazine articles & books, and blogging) and have been working on a Napoleonic project that is involving me renovating, varnishing, and basing a large number of 25/28mm figures. I am also planning to start work on an Operation Barbarossa project for which I have been collecting stuff for years.

Cardinal Ximenez10 Sep 2016 11:49 a.m. PST

Yes indeed.

mckrok Supporting Member of TMP10 Sep 2016 11:50 a.m. PST

That's the plan. I certainly didn't bust my ass all these years not to focus on my chosen hobby in retirement.

Sysiphus10 Sep 2016 12:15 p.m. PST

I am retired now 7 years. Initially spent time as caregiver to my parents and my gaming was on hold for three years; not what I expected.
Rejoined my old group but they had moved on in many ways; so found a new group with different game focus. I now find myself painting and gaming more than before I retired, and exploring and enjoying a part of military history I had neglected.

Dale Hurtt10 Sep 2016 12:40 p.m. PST

No, unfortunately. I know that my mind requires I rotate through my hobbies, so I will wargame more I suppose when it is wargaming's turn.

wrgmr110 Sep 2016 12:52 p.m. PST

As Shaun at S&S models said: retirement, what's that….

Dicymick10 Sep 2016 1:15 p.m. PST

I also retired 10 years ago. But I painted and built so much stuff I started running out of space, so had to slow down. I might even get a game in some time.

I never see myself retiring.

Rrobbyrobot10 Sep 2016 1:34 p.m. PST

I've been retired for awhile now. But I did much more war gaming while I was employed. Especially while I was in the Army. They called it 'going to the field'.

Calico Bill10 Sep 2016 2:54 p.m. PST

Retired some 14 years ago. Went from one 4+ hour gaming session a week to four. My other gaming activities have gone up by almost the same amount. Life is good.

I anticipate dying before I retire.

Ragbones10 Sep 2016 3:49 p.m. PST

I retired last October and definitely have found more time for the hobby. On the downside, though, I have much less disposable income to spend on figures, terrain, etc. so I try to be very selective in my purchases. I've been taking a hard look at my existing collections with the idea of selling one or more of them to finance the expansion of my 28mm Napoleonic armies (Elite Miniatures and Calpe). I tried setting up a game using my 15mm Stone Mountain ACW a couple months ago but it just didn't appeal to me like it used to. The same with my 54-60mm Conte and TSSD Alamo collection.

rustymusket10 Sep 2016 6:44 p.m. PST

I am retiring in November and plan to do more painting, but it has been years since I gamed. I may look into doing it more, but only time will tell? I have already narrowed periods and with less money, I doubt I will expand in that regard, but things could change.

Personal logo gamertom Supporting Member of TMP10 Sep 2016 8:47 p.m. PST

I keep deluding myself by thinking I'll be able to paint & game more once I retire in 10 months (not that I'm counting). I've noticed that my wife who retired a year ago has not been quilting as much as she thought she might. Ask again in a year.

Personal logo Doctor X Supporting Member of TMP11 Sep 2016 1:22 a.m. PST

Absolutely more time…

Toronto4811 Sep 2016 8:47 a.m. PST

Retired 10 years this December I am doing much more painting and general modelling but less gaming Sometimes it is just too much effort to pack everything up and head off to game usually in a period or set of rules that I am really not into. I think you will find that as you get older there is a generation gap between yourself and the "younger gamers"

You may still be interested in the rules you have always played but others want the new fanboy sets that they play to death for a while then move on to the next new thing There is such a thing as old school wargamers and I am right in the middle of it Give me a rule set by a Grant or Featherstone and I am happy as heck as I now have all the toys necessary to play the game I actually wanted to do twenty years ago
