I am looking for recommendations for good historical fiction based on any of the New Zealand Colonial Wars. I have read Maurice Shadbolt, but he's not my cup of tea. I am looking for something to energize my imagination and stimulate some scenario ideas for an upcoming game set during the 1860's conflicts. I own a pretty decent sized library of nonfiction on the subject, including Cowan, Belich, Maxwell and Ryan and Parham. What I'm looking for is something along the lines of a good Flashman book. Too bad George MacDonald Fraser didn't live long enough to write one. |

I read Monday's Warriors, and enjoyed it,though the Maori characters were a little more tight-lipped than the impression I get from reading history. I don't know of any other authors. But some may have been published only in NZ. Henry did one,Maori and Settler, long ago. If you've read anything by him,you know what to expect. I assume you've seen Utu. |

I have Utu and River Queen, thanks. And I read Monday's Warriors. Thanks for the rec's. Anyone read Kiwi Wars by Gary Douglas Kilworth? It's one of the Fancy Jack Crossman series. |

I have a few series you can check out, some very stimulating stuff! The Governor, from the 70s is set in the period, with some excellent battle scenes: link And of course James Belich's "the New Zealand Wars": YouTube link Looks like most of the series is on youtube now :) |
