What is your usual justification for purchasing wargame miniatures? Obviously, this poll is for those of us that are not new to the hobby, and have amassed piles of unpainted miniatures over the years and still continue to buy more. Check as many as apply and/or offer some additional justifications as well.

(a) I need these miniatures to complete a project.
(b) All of my friends are buying more miniatures.
(c) I am bored and need something shiny and new in my life.
(d) Miniature manufacturers need to eat too.
(e) I am starting an important new project.
(f) My doctor recommended this for health reasons.
(g) I am helping to sustain the current economic expansion.
(h) I want to impress others with my spending habits.
(i) It will make me a more interesting person.
(j) I love the thrill of receiving packages in the mail.
(k) It will ignite my creativity and thus promote brain cell growth.

They are too cool not to buy!

Winston Smith07 Sep 2016 7:03 p.m. PST

(m) I simply want them. No more justification is necessary.

Part of the hobby is collecting miniatures where as it's nice to get them all painted buying ones that you like and plan to paint is just as critical to the enjoyment.

Certainly you need to stay within a budget but…

Rich Bliss07 Sep 2016 7:18 p.m. PST

These days it's usually a). I even declared (foolishly) a few years ago, that Imwouldn't be starting any new periods, just finish ones I've already started. I've only started 2 completely new periods since then.

rmaker07 Sep 2016 7:18 p.m. PST

Winston Smith +1.

Hobbies are self-justifying. Even questionable ones like casino gambling.

Avicenna79907 Sep 2016 7:34 p.m. PST

(l) I buy them now because they might not be available latter.

Narratio07 Sep 2016 7:41 p.m. PST

+1 Winston, added to a look of confusion that anybody could even think of asking the question.
It's worked for 60 odd years.

Winston has the right of it.

I can no longer justify buying new miniatures in my current economic circumstances. I have moved on to papercraft figure flats, I can get 20 or so for 83 cents :-)

Dust Warrior07 Sep 2016 8:29 p.m. PST

If I don't tell anyone I don't have to justify it.

I'm retired. I'm a widower. My son is raised. I don't have to justify my purchases. That said, it's mostly (a) The trick is to reorganize or redefine the projects so they're always a bit short of something.

Changed circumstances help too--the 54mm army in event of failing vision and the 5mm army in event of cramped quarters are both good. (Prove your vision will never get worse, or you'll never wind up in cramped quarters.)

I can't stop! For all the reasons you list.

A and E.

gamershs07 Sep 2016 11:28 p.m. PST

I inherited 25,000 miniatures in March. I just need to fill in the missing units :>

For me, A and E and L (suggested above), plus a new one: New figures are released for a range or period I already collect and they fill a gap in my existing collection or are improvements over what I already have, so I need to expand/upgrade to improve my collection.

GarrisonMiniatures08 Sep 2016 1:47 a.m. PST

It's a hobby. How do people justify paying ridiculous course fees to hit a little white ball with a stick? or run around on expensive, noisy and smokey bicycles just because they have had a big engine fitted?

If we have money we sometimes spend it on things we want.

As someone in the hobby once said 'How can you have too much of somethingyou didn't need in the first place.'

So, N, It's my hobby.

John Armatys08 Sep 2016 2:02 a.m. PST

They were cheap and I needed them.

Texas Jack08 Sep 2016 2:15 a.m. PST

Winston has hit the nail on the head.

whitphoto08 Sep 2016 2:21 a.m. PST

I spend what I can afford and don't bother justifying it. My per-game cost is a fraction of the cost of a movie, or a golf game, or a bar tab.

Green Tiger08 Sep 2016 4:16 a.m. PST

A & J…

skinkmasterreturns08 Sep 2016 4:43 a.m. PST

Winston is the man! I dont need any justification, either.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP08 Sep 2016 6:06 a.m. PST

While Winston is unquestionably right I only buy to finish off projects – which should take me about the next two decades

Timmo uk08 Sep 2016 7:04 a.m. PST

A, F and J (F – yes it's true – model making is a UK National Health Service suggested therapy for pain management)

Buck21508 Sep 2016 7:35 a.m. PST

Sales! If an offer is too good to pass up on minis that I want, need, or can't live without, then I don't pass it up…

What Winston said.

Weasel08 Sep 2016 8:19 a.m. PST

Well, since I had to give up a whole bunch of stuff when we moved, its easy now :-)

but otherwise I don't fuss it. If I have spare hobby money and there's something I want, I get it.

Perris070708 Sep 2016 9:40 a.m. PST

Yup, J. Like Christmas all year.

steamingdave4708 Sep 2016 10:50 a.m. PST

To whom do I have to justify purchases? I am now immune to my dear wife's sarcastic comments about the potential weakness of our upstairs floorboards. I am definitely in Winston's camp- I want them, I have the cash, I buy them.

Frederick the not so great08 Sep 2016 1:34 p.m. PST

I am, therefore I buy.
