"The last appearance by WWII German tanks on the world's battlefields came in 1967, when Syria's panzer force faced off against modern Israeli armor. Quite improbably, Syria had assembled it's collection of ex-Wehrmacht vehicles from a half-dozen sources over a decade and a half timeframe…" link

Not true as regards the last though. I was a picture of a burning Panzer II in the streets of Beirut in the Fall of '83. Which does not make it the last either. There is a serious difference between "the last" and "the latest one I know about." |

Kind of cherry picking, Robert. The point is that this was the lasts time WW2 vehicles were used en masse as front line tanks. I doubt there was more than 1 or 2 PZIIs. You could take that logic and say the CV33 was last used in the 2nd Iraq war.

Very interesting. I knew Syria had used a few Pz4s, but thought it was only 4-5, the rest was completly new to me. |

Interesting. I had thought that the Pz IVs used in the Arab-Israeli wars were utilized as dug-in AT pillboxes. Doug |

I had thought that the Pz IVs used in the Arab-Israeli wars were utilized as dug-in AT pillboxes.
Indeed. This was my impression as well. I had a reasonably firm belief that the PzIVs were all dug-in as pillboxes. Seems to be quite to the contrary. A very interesting read. Pz IVs, StuGs and even the odd battery of Hummels still driving about in military service in 1967? Who'd a thunk it! And … if you guys didn't look around the site in the link, there are MANY interesting stories of WW2 kit in post-war service there! Everyday you lern something new at TMP! True, that! But it is due to the quality of discussion among the members that this is so! I enjoyed it, my friend! Thanks, Armand. -Mark (aka: Mk 1) |

Considering how many Shermans and M3 halftracks the Israelis were driving around at the time, I don't think we should be so surprised at Panzer IVs… |
