The well disciplined troopers of the Camel Corps checked their rifles and prepared for the onslaught. They didn't have long to wait. link Five units of Beja and Ansar infantry appeared from the East, West and South. They quickly converged on the British-Egyptian square. Orders were shouted and the British Lee Metfords replied to the charge. link The initial volleys failed to slow the attack and the Dervish units threatened contact. Meanwhile, against orders, the officer commanding the British lancers ordered a charge into an unbroken unit of Beja that had appeared from the North.
