I was just forced to sit through this last night and I don't know how to get two hours of my life back. Seeing this drek got me thinking,,,is there any good movie about an ancient peltast perhaps? |
IanKHemm | 06 Sep 2016 4:57 p.m. PST |
Yeah: "I Was A Teenage Peltast" It's a 1950's movie about a teen peltast that runs afoul of the law in his hometown. He takes off with his girl in his chariot but the long arm of The Law eventually catches up with them. The moral of the story is that illegal pelting doesn't pay. |

Ahh…those were the days…my misspent youth engaged in heavy pelting. |

I have a good friend who hasn't said as much, but I'm pretty sure that he'll never, ever watch "300." He posts here on TMP, so it'll be interesting to see if he comments. Who forced you to watch "300"? I don't mean to be rude, I'm just curious. Jeff |

My family forced it on me. With a degree in Classical studies and a love of ancients my stomach churned the entire time. Years ago on TMP there was a great movie review about a film about Vercingetorex. To say that the reviewer heaped dung on it from a great height would be no exaggeration. I now know how he felt. "I was a teenage peltast", sounds pretty intersting in comparison. At some point during the horse charge at sea, I found myself cheering for the Persians to put an end to my misery. |

Wait… you mean the Xerxes DIDN'T have an elite unit of Persian ninja orcs on war-rhinos? No way! |

A friend of mine described it as the greatest film for 12 year old boys. |

The 300 film was based on a comic book. I think you can rest assured that nobody who has watched that film confuses it with history. It's basically a superhero movie, almost completely divorced from the historical events on which it is loosely based. The idea is to enjoy the ridiculousness and spectacle. Not sure why adults need this explained to them but there you go. |

Sadly Aquaman did not make an appearance and take them all out. It would have made it interesting though. |

+1 Troopwo for best thread title in recent memory. I enjoyed the movie. So how about we trade? You give me your two hours watching 3oo and I'll give you my three watching "Saving Private Ryan." |

I always thought it was a war story an old Spartan told his grandchildren. |

I loved it. I thought it did a great job of telling the story of the Battle of Thermopylae as told to Spartans who weren't there by one of their own. We complain about kids not knowing anything about the past and then we complain about things that might inspire them to learn something about it. It was the comic book version of this story that got me interested in history after my 9th grade history teacher turned me off of it. It is probably one of the better ancient themed movies out there after Alexander. |

I loved it too…I've quiet enjoyed this franchise so far it does take me back to the comic book era going up, think it's meant to. Very clever I think. |

Troopwo, you're talking about the sequel, right? Didn't see it,just the original. Fortunately,I went to a weekday matinee,so no one was there to complain about my guffaws. The best result was this sort of thing,of which there are by now hours of variations: youtu.be/w2JFMd73AzQ I confess to having watched most of them. |

I loved it too, but then I can easily distinguish a movie made from a comic book from actual history. |

I didn't. I liked Miller's book, but I found the movie boring. And no, I wasn't expecting a historical movie. I knew what I was going to watch. |

As history it was garbage but as a bit of entertainment – it was still garbage. |

I spent the whole movie looking at my watch. Kept thinking just hurry up and kill them so I can leave. A movie is bad when it doesn't make you feel anything for the hero. At least "The 300 Spartans" made me feel for the actor playing the Spartan leader when he died and even more when the rest of the Spartans died at the end. |

I thought it was pretty good as history, actually. It got the story partially right. The comic did a better job of getting the history right, the movie had some parts added in that didn't need to be. But it still got the message across in an enjoyable and eye-catching way. Most of the stuff that wasn't "accurate" could be put down to exaggeration by the person telling the story. I thought the depiction of the Persian army was especially good. They made it look fierce for a modern audience. Making them look accurate could possibly have left the viewer with the idea that the Spartans were fighting against a bunch of guys that didn't change out of their pajamas. Sometimes you have to alter what the reality may have been to get the true message across. |

As a history piece, the only thing missing was the giant stompy robots. |

The Odyssey was based on a probably anti-climatic boat trip back from sacking a rival city. People love(d) it. No less fantastic AND there was a freaking stompy bronze robot in that one. What's the difference? Homer may have been pleased to sell the rights for a screen play or a line of toys based upon the series. The battle of Salamis was Yuge; easily made into myth as the mightiest Empire was brought low for a while. In 2000 years how will Stalingrad and the Battle of Britain be told? |
