I am painting a unit of Old Guard Grenadier a Chevel and have looked at many images and websites to see the colour of their mounts. The majority state or show black mounts. Some are shown as pure black, others with various white face and foot markings.
I know this is a little nerdy, but does anyone know if the regulations stated pure black, or was it common to have markings?

From what I remember reading the goal was all black. Early on they were probably able to field all black mounts but as the wars progressed this was less likely due availability.

I'd accept blazes but no socks.

markings – I would bet yes, but despite the horses should be all black there are more than one contemporary print showing different colours as well.

In Napoleons Elite Cavalry tour de force, the horses are depicted with the odd blaze and/or sock, and these by Knotel show white socks and blazes a plenty.
