I need the help of a cold warrior! I am building a terrain board for gaming west of Fulda. Basically a 21x18 km area between Herbstein and Blakenau in the north and Hartmannshain and Hauswurz in the south. I am trying to figure out how hard it would be for armor and vehicles to cross creeks/small rivers like the Schwarza, Altfeld, and Moosback. How wide and deep or bank height required engineers? Thanks in advance. |

Having spent 4 years stationed in Germany in the 80's the smaller rivers were only regarded as speed bumps for the Soviets. The BMP's could swim them quickly as most had shallow approach and exit points readily available. We even found a few smaller rivers were the local farmers had built stone block fords to move their tractors from field to field. We actually used one to move 113's and Bradley's across. The road surface was only about 8 inches under water. Now when the river got closer to a built up area the steeper the bank would be. Most rivers in Germany actually started looking like cannals when they got close to towns with cobblestone or stone brick banks. I know in our planning that the Altfeld was only expected to delay the Soviets no longer then 45 minutes, we planned for 20 minutes. Hope that helps. |
