I think this is almost more ransom ware than crowd funding. "Fork over $100 USDk or we bury this."

It's going to have cardboard heroes figures in the box. I understand their reasons but man would this be a fine opportunity to put out a couple modular sprues covering a wide range of adventurers and monsters.

If you keep to separate heads and one hand with no weapons you can probably fit a dozen figures on a sprue. So maybe male and female human fighter, dwarf fighter, elf ranger, human wizard, human thief, half orc rogue.

The other sprue would have 2 orcs, 2 goblins, 2 lizardmen, 3 kobolds, 3 rats, and one ogre or possibly a non humanoid like a manticore or basilisk.

Ideally you'd want a dragon, but that's a whole sprue by itself.

Halfway there.

Yeah, I just hope it doesn't fizzle before the target is reached. I'm sure they did their research and thought it out but there's only so many GURPS fans and with shipping to Europe costing more than the boxed set there's a significant chunk of people who only want the pdfs. One of the reasons rpgs moved away from boxed sets is that there are many countries where the sales tax on books is lower than it is on games.

So this is an updated version of the GURPS dungeon fantasy pdf's ?

I rather like the idea and GURPS is one of the best systems out there.

Wish I knew people locally who played GURPS, I would like to see how it plays.

David Johansen04 Sep 2016 2:13 p.m. PST

Really you just need people locally who would try GURPS.

There really isn't a one book solution for playing High Fantasy but you can do Swords and Sorcery with nothing more than GURPS Lite and the adventure Caravan to Ein Arris which is available for free on SJG's online store.

GURPS Magic is necessary if you want magic and Banestorm has monsters. You might use Basic Set volume one and the modular abilities advantage to handle magic instead. Many people aren't fond of the standard magic system.

GURPS problem has always been that although it can emulate any type of game you want, it takes some work on the part of the players and GM to get there. This Dungeon Fantasy boxed set is a great attempt to introduce people to what GURPS can do for swords & sorcery and dungeon crawling. I worry there are not enough people willing to commit to make this set a reality, however.

I own many of the Dungen Fantasy PDF's and happily supported this Kickstarter--with SJ Games I have zero fear about a failed Kickstarter except for the possibility it fails to launch altogether.

Yeah, I worry that the initial goal is too high. I get that they're trying to gauge the market and all that but a nice 64 page Fantasy booklet would have been a good $5,000 USD goal. They lost money on the Ogre kickstarter in the end and are gun shy of stretch goals as a result.

Looks like they've solved the European shipping issue.

That may be enough of a not stretch goal to get them the rest of the way.

It's very easy to die in GURPS, so the players really have to step up their tactics to survive. Most games are maneuvering for advantage so you can commit a one sided murder, since fair fights are so deadly.
Much easier on the DM/GM in some ways, as there is no such thing as an "invulnerable " PC.

The base line characters for Dungeon Fantasy are 250 points, and while I've never picked up the pdfs I expect there's some genre modification options in play.

Even so, in low tech settings, wearing armor and carrying a shield really help.

Well, it's funded. They found reduced shipping options for Europe and Australia. Not much to tell beyond that I guess.
