As the American Heritage volume on the Civil War was brought up for discussion on the Civil War boards, I thought that this might be of interest to the forum. This volume was my first exposure to the Revolution and it sparked my long-lived interest in the Continental Army. The first time I read it I was in the 3d or 4th grade, I think. Anything anyone might care to add would be of interest, I think. |

It's very good. Well illustrated, as one would expect, and comprehensive. |

Agree. The book is a great place to begin a study of the Revolution. I have it, along with the companion books by American Heritage on the Civil War, Wars I and II, as well as their Atlas of American History. |

I have the AMR and ACW books myself. |

I found my copy at a used book store for about $3.00 USD – worth every penny in my opinion. Frankly, many of the newer 'revisionist' history books aren't worth the paper they're printed on – especially for children. You can always count on American Heritage to inspire! |

I regard as a primer. Something to increase the interest in the era for the reader. |

Agree. And it's also a good read. The text by Bruce Lancaster is excellent and, interestingly, the Introduction is by Bruce Catton. The book is definitely a keeper and can lead to more and better research. |

…many of the newer 'revisionist' history books aren't worth the paper they're printed on… Agree completely. Too many of them perpetuate the old tired myths instead of being based on solid research. |

Those "epic" battle illustrations were the best. Got me into history and wargaming. |

I own both of the books – AWI and ACW. I was hoping the AWI would have the same outstanding maps of the battles but sadly it didn't. I recall the ACW from being a young gamer and it was the best wargame porn of my early history and really helped me down the road to being a life time addict. Chris |

I believe that those maps came with the Civil War book which was published after the book on the Revolution. If you can find a copy of American Heritage's Pictorial Atlas of United States History, which was published in 1966 the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, Bemis Heights, and Cowpens are given the same 'treatment', map-wise, as the battles in their Civil War volume. I highly recommend the book. You can find it for 6 dollars and change on abebooks. |
