I the current issue of the journal of the Society of 20th century wargamers there is a article on the range that pistols are used. Apparently there has been research that in most military and police shootings the range of engagement was 5 to 7 feet with a good number of these resulting in no casualties. The author of the article (Greg Potter) tried shooting at a man sized target at 10m, full mag and got no hits. After shooting several magazines he was able to get a few hits on the target. So lets say that the effective range with a modern rifled handgun is 10 years/metres. |

I shoot air pistol. My back stop is smaller than a human torso. I shoot at a 1 inch circle at 10 yards and rarely miss the post it note I draw it on. Post it notes don't shoot back, run around or gush blood though. |

For the game engine I'm designing, most weapons have 'unlimited' range, but pistols have a rapid fall-off of being able 'to hit' up to 18" (18+" being an automatic miss.) If you use extra actions to aim, you'll increase your chances of a hit, but nothing is ever guaranteed… |

The average soldier in average conditions? 3 meters sounds about right for scoring a hit with a reasonable chance for success. 10 meters if you're lucky. At least, that's what I remember from my army days. We are all miseducated by action movies in which the hero shoots out of the side window at the tire of the car in front of him at 100kph. |

In my rules i normally define a pistol as a melee weapon. But I tend to write rules for larger actions. For skirmish scale games I might make them ranged weapons I might even give them "hollywood" ranges and effectiveness. |

Higher accuracy within a limited range compared with a rifle. |

In a man to man skirmish, you'll expect pistols to be represented, since we have so many cool officer figures holding one :-) A few inches and a bonus in close combat seems reasonable. In a pulp style game of course, pistol fire can be quite effective and you'll need a bonus for two-fisting a pair of Mauser broomhandles. In a ww2 game, I'd be inclined to consider a bonus to pistol fire once you're within the few inches it can reach, since you can squeeze off quite a few bullets very quickly compared to a bolt-action rifle. |
