Due to the unsettled situation in the southern Philippines, including 'extralegal executions', Editor Gwen today relocated back to Manila. Here is her family farewell:

Family farewell for Aunt Gwen

Oddly enough, when Gwen checked in for her flight, security told her that her ID was invalid and she could not fly. The airlines then refused to refund her ticket, saying it was too late for a refund. So she had to buy another airline ticket (and this time, her ID was OK'd).

Over Manila

Her relocation means she will be unable to work until she can get an internet connection installed. So, if you need Gwen's help for something, better PM me instead.

I had a similar experience leaving Manila years ago. I was booked to fly out and they verified my passport details along with my booking, but would not let me fly unless I could produce a printed copy of the flight which was booked by my agent back home. So I bought another ticket on the spot and then claimed insurance for the unusable ticket. I then had to cancel my Visa Card when I got home.

My sympathies to Editor Gwen and everybody else involved.

'extralegal executions'????

What is that when its at home????

If you mean Muslim attacks on people there then say so.

More likely vigilante justice. google their new president.

That – also being mis-used to settle grudges / target people with different life-styles / allow extreme bigotry – cannot blame her for moving away from it! I like their presidents stance on big time dealers (if the world just legalised drugs the same as they have done booze, tobacco, tea, coffee – all 'drugs', then they could police real problems), but it's a real cluster-**** as to how it's all being implemented. Stay safe.

The death toll currently is at around 1800, no clue how many were targets of opportunity or for that matter innocents who may have had dirt on the police.

People are right to seek safety.

Current estimates c.2400,including this 5 year old girl:

He specifically gave permission and encouragement for anyone to kill drug users.

He's also cursed Philippine judges, our President,Ban Ki Moon, and the Pope,in terms I can't quote without being DH'd.

Currently polls around 90%. Apparently, the yearning for the "Strong Man" who'll solve all problems is a universal character flaw.

Oops--estimates gone up:

Don't expect it to end soon. During his election campaign,he predicted 100,000 deaths:
