Trying to find figs for "hoard of the dragon queen" (D&D 5e) and the only guard drakes I can find are those plastic guys form WOtC. Can anyone recommend something in metal?

I think I actually have a few of the older plastic Guard Drakes laying around somewhere. Maybe check one of the Ral Partha Lizardfolk lines, if memory serves they may have a guard beast or something similar.

If not, perhaps look for something in the line of a 10mm Chinese Dragon or T-rex?

Doesn't Tin Soldier do a mini-Rex ? Nice little figure.

I struggled with that – they are only medium creatures. All the 28mm versions I could find needed a large creature footprint (at least).

I'd recommend looking at 15mm ranges for a decent lizard type critter.
