Can you think of some movies that the critics hated or which failed at the box office, but which wargamers love? |

By no means a stinker (neither a masterpiece), Battle of Britain (Dir. Guy Hamilton, 1969). It fared poorly during its initial release, but I think it's magnificent. Ron |

13th Warrior is a great movie. Best depiction of Vikings ever in a movie. I think the critics hated Dune; I really liked it. |

How could I have forgot Dune? David Lynch's mad Magnum Opus! I like his films, but this is the one that I will see twenty times. Ron |

Major Dundee. And The Green Berets has inspired some convention games. But anyone who hasn't seen 13th Warrior or John Carter needs to do that immediately. |

Dark of the Sun. Actually, I don't know how it fared with critics, or whether wargamers like it. Anyway, I'm a wargamer, and I like it. 13th Warrior is great (despite the magical language acquisition sequence -- you can't learn a language like that). Watch Beowulf and Grendel (the 2005 Icelandic-Canadian production) as a chaser. It will be a richer experience if you have studied Beowulf. Glad to see pitches for David Lynch's Dune and for Zulu. |

The Alamo (2004) A 100 million loss at the box office. But it has the best and most realistic horse and musket battles ever made. |
GarrisonMiniatures | 02 Sep 2016 1:45 a.m. PST |
Loads. I like the old, cheesy horror/SF films, many of which are considered 'bad'. Also like a lot of modern CGI films – often no real story line, but not an issue, it's entertainment, not education. |

I love so many of these movies you've all listed! I'll add Tristan and Isolde, the James Franco movie. Terrible history, but a great story, and some fine Dark Age skirmishes. A fine film! |

The "Wind and the Lion." The historian in me knows that the events as depicted in the movie are mostly false; but the wargamer in me keeps thinking that that is the way things should have been. Kevin |

John Carter is a great film. The 13th Warrior is a fabulous interpretation of a very famous story…very inventive – I really like it. 10,000BC is silly, but a lot of fun. Hawk the slayer is a masterpiece. Well, it's a great original edition D&D adventure anyway. |

I personally don't care how the critics liked it or how the box office did- shallow of me I know but I do know what I like. I know many are not accurate or historical but they put me in a Wargaming mood. In no particular order: Glory, Gettysburg, Master and Commander, the Gun(ok Pride and Prejudice), the entire series of LOTR and Hobbit, Aliens, Gladiator, Brave Heart, 12 o'clock High, the Longest Day, Patriot, A Bridge Too Far, Sharpe, Zulu, Red Dawn, Patton, We Were Soldiers, Waterloo, the Charge of the Light Brigade, Gunga Din. |

Did you even read the title of this thread? Yes I did and I found articles with those movies in them where not all critics like them. Godzilla & Predator from here link The Wizard of Oz did not become well know until they started to show it on TV in the mid 1950's. I remember watching it nearly every year during the 1960's. So if you search long enough you will find that there were critics that did not like those movies. |

The Postman starring Kevin Costner and Will Patton is my favorite movie of all time. The Holnists inspired me to start playing Nationstates back in the day and has lead me down the path to righteousness and feudalism. |

You haven't lived till you have sat and seen hours of the old Italian sword and sandal movies (1950-1960 era) with the male weightlifter stars of the times. The Italian girls, dressed in their "ancient gowns",… joked as dating the producer or director at the time for the part, typically playing the bad character. |
20thmaine | 06 Sep 2016 4:55 p.m. PST |
How could critics not have liked the original Godzilla is beyond me but then I don't like critics anyway and their opinions well they just suck big time. It was cut about a bit and badly dubbed for English speaking audiences. The original cut – recently restored – is far superior.
