The Catton/Foote thread got me wondering about some modern historians work. I'm quite fond of William C Davis's work, especially Look Away and would be interested in other members opinion.
Also what other authors are notable?

jowady01 Sep 2016 1:40 p.m. PST

James McPherson
Gordon Rhea
Dave Powell
Eric Wittenburg/David Petruzzi
Ed Bearss****
Peter Cozzens
Jeffrey Wert

Just a few currently working off the top of my head

More on the political/social side – William Freehling.

John Thomas801 Sep 2016 5:24 p.m. PST

I second Wittenburg and Sears

Hard to add to the list so far (they're all good). But for the naval side I'll add Robert M. Browning for his works on the the Union naval blockade squadrons.

Larry Daniel for his works on the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Wiley Sword for his works on the Western Theater. Albert Castel for his classic Decision in the West.

I blame Wiley Sword for inspiring me to do Battle of Franklin and build lots of acw units

Allen Guelzo's "Gettysburg: The Last Invasion" is the best book I've ever read on the subject. Highly recommended.

vtsaogames02 Sep 2016 4:43 a.m. PST

Second for Guelzo's "Gettysburg".

Gordon Rhea, Gary Gallagher, Ed Bearss, David Powell, and Bradley Gottfried with his amazing map books

Blutarski02 Sep 2016 7:02 a.m. PST

Let me throw in a vote for John Priest and his work on Antietam.

Definitely Rhea, Sears, Gottfried and Hess.

People speak well of Pfanz too but personally I'm not so keen on his writing style as the four above.

McPherson still has the best single volume book on the war and its causes.

donlowry02 Sep 2016 8:51 a.m. PST

Pfanz is very informative, and not badly written at all.

Earl Hess is the current expert on low level Civil War tactics which might be of great interest to a war-gamer. He has written a number of excellent books over the last ten years.

Wow. I am flattered to be mentioned in this august listing of Civil War historians! Only a few of us are also wargamers.

Garde de Paris02 Sep 2016 1:44 p.m. PST

Any reason Bruce Catton is not mentioned?

Any reason Bruce Catton is not mentioned?

Well, the subject was on modern (presumably living) authors. While an important author, Catton died nearly 40 years ago (1978).

Trajanus03 Sep 2016 5:46 a.m. PST

Don,

Not saying Pfanz is a bad writer, I just prefer the style of the others I mention. :o)

Oh! and looking back over the postings, I don't know how I missed Scott's and vtsaogames votes for Guelzo. Having been reminded I should have had him in my original group too!
