"Congratulations on being elected president!"

One of the things we have to brief you on is a highly classified project called Stargate. It started out as theoretical research project ran by DARPA. What it produced was 'portals' to what we believe to be alternate universes.

The project opens a energy gate exactly 2.3 meters. We can sustain the gate stable for about 10 minutes, needing an hour to cycle. The gate was originally developed at Stanford University, since then we have moved it to the USAF base in "Bohome, AZ" You provably know it as "Area 51. The gate machinery itself requires four semi trucks to move it. It also has large power requirements, currently being met by the nuclear power plant at Area 51.

We have identified 31 of what we believe to be alternate earths. We believe the gate establishes a link to it's counterpart location on the alternate earths.

We have not send anyone through the gates yet, but have been able to sample the atmospheres. 1 of them is highly radioactive (we believe as the result of nuclear war), 1 of them has a very high levels of pollution, 3 have levels that are roughly equal to 'our Earth during the 20th and 21st century, which we believe means they support complex industrial societies. Two others have very low levels of pollution which may mean that they are either more advanced (and using 'greener energy') or they are less advanced. One seems to be in an ice age. 24 seem to be relatively virginal.

Our science advisers believe we will encounter human and perhaps 'neanderthal' populations on the other planets. We do not know what the other cultures will be like, as we don't know when the deviations occurred.

We have done nothing but sample atmosphere until we could get an effective quarantine facility in place. In seven days a quarantine facility will be open that will allow us to send either tethered robots or human scouts through the qates. Remote control systems will not work as the gates do not allow 'radio or electromagnetic radiation' through the gate.

Mr President. The Secretary of State wants to address the UN Security council in secret to determine the way ahead. She thinks our first priority should be to meet and establish formal relations with the industrialized worlds, under a UN treaty.

The Secretary of Defense recommends that we send small numbers of Special Forces troops through to what we believe are the virginal planets and conduct reconnaissance. He recommends we identify non-populated planets and claim them for ourselves. He recommends that we very slowly explore establishing relations with the 'industrialized worlds.'

The Secretary of Agriculture and Interior agree with Sec Def.

Currently there are only 30 people (with Top Secret Omega-Epsilon clearances) who know "most of the story." Many people who work at the labs know they are working on quantum physics research.

This is now your decision. How shall we go forward?

(A interesting branch would be you are "Dave Branson (or Bill Gates or some other VERY wealthy corporate persona) what would you do in that case. Do you bring it to any government or the UN or try to keep it a secret.

First off the UN will never ever know about this and 2nd, that Ice Age planet will make for a great prison planet.

Then I would want 24 Teams put together (military, science, etc…) and sent to the 24 planets to gather data.

Then several more teams sent to the other planets but these will need to be undercover to see if contact can or should be made.

Robots only. With fiber optic control lines, we can gain pretty good range and altitude. I need top medical experts to develop tests for anything and everything that might be in the air, water, or soil. I don't want to be known as the President that introduced hyper-aids-ebola to our world. Some of those quiet worlds might be quiet for a damned good reason. Also, what are you failsafe protocols if some of the locals are hostile and more advanced than we are?

Oh yeah, and send the Secretary in. We have to talk.

zircher31 Aug 2016 6:53 p.m. PST

When did Area 51 (in Nevada) become part of Arizona? :-)

Zircher: Aw, I see the disinformation program is working. :)

Apparently it's too late to edit the original post.

How many of those planets are sending 'teams' to survey our planet? Place a guard at the gate.

Since stargates seem a way to travel to favorable planets we probably can't disband NASA as there will be a need to go to a lot of other places.

I never could believe that a cable to a robot could work as it would have to be 100s of light years in length. But that is Stargate 'science' so just call it magic.

The teams should be made up some military for security and a science team and a diplomatic team. But they should all have the highest security clearance. We don't want any to go rogue.

War Monkey02 Sep 2016 7:53 a.m. PST

First off is the gate able to handle two way travel of large objects other the air samples? This as not been determined as of yet.

Yes I would have a few teams no more then four total, made up of military and scientists, less people in the need to know column, with a Quick Reaction Force just in case they get in to trouble.

Humans would be better to send then robots for many of obvious reasons, we would start with those that seem to be uninhibited first and grow from there, base of operations would be handle on the other side of the gates so living quarters and labs would be on that side of the gates as primary quarantine and this side of the gate would be secondary quarantine, so all materials for living quarters would have to be designed to be able to go through the gate and be able to easily be erected and last for long periods.

so until these criteria have been meet moving on to other worlds will have to be on hold.

Bury the gate in concrete and drop it in the Marianas Trench. Then destroy the research. Too damn dangerous to even contemplate.

The idea kind'a reminds me of the short story 'Mozart in Mirror shades'!

Anyway punching holes in the fabric of space time is going to picked up by someone's physics experiment somewhere. So full disclosure and no one with a uniform or gun is allowed to go through the portal! Yes, I know completely takes the fun out of it as a gaming scenario…

Lion in the Stars02 Sep 2016 3:51 p.m. PST

My personal fear would be being on the wrong end of a "Gate, Thus the JSDF…" scenario, where the other side of the gate is about a thousand years ahead of us, technologically.

(In the Gate setting, a "typical fantasy world" opens a gate into Ginza, Tokyo 20XX, and sends a Roman-tech Legion marauding through on a slave raid. Things do not go well for the Empire, particularly once the JSDF marches through the gate with an Armored Brigade. Testudos don't survive 155mm airbursts.)

So I'd be sending recon teams through.

capncarp02 Sep 2016 10:17 p.m. PST

Drones, lots of drones and recon bots to get the basics of any local populations. Try to decipher/translate the language, determine what they value for trade/bribe purposes.

Probably the best solution.
I didn't watch too much of Stargate because it was nonsense so I didn't get the 'science'. I know aliens who built had starships. They used the starships to plant the stargates so they could come and go easier. In my space universe the aliens should just send robot ships to plant stargates then travel to a new world through the gate. Space travel should take a long time even with FTL drives. No need to sit in a container and face all the dangers then to just wait for the stargate to be set up.

Though that would present the problem the president would have and not knowing what is on the other side of the gate. Maybe an even more advanced race than the stargate builders.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa04 Sep 2016 5:07 a.m. PST

I'd also go with no drones especially anything that is remotely mil'spec.

And even if the entire project is buried in concrete I'd suggest researching counter meaures to prevent gates being opened on to our Earth.
