Hi, I bought the Warlord Pegasus bridge and I am doing a little extra detailing. I have searched the internet for photos, but need a little help from someone that has visited the bridge. It looks like the bridge roadway is steel grating and the walkways are wooden plank. Is that correct? Was it that way in WWII? Also, for the 2nd deck around the control tower, is that steel, wooden, or steel grating? I am also very curious what if anyone has interior pictures for the control tower. Ditto for the building sitting next to it. Any idea where the pump mechanism and electrical controls where? I also assume that the foundation for the bridge at both ends is concrete – is that right? Thanks a bunch! |

Just had a look at my photos taken on the 70th anniversary and it looks like the 2nd deck is steel. The main road and walkway are as you say. No info on the interior I'm afraid and as the original bridge is now in the museum I don't know about the foundations, but I would assume that they would have to be pretty substantial. |

I did some more searching and found some nice video footage of Pegasus Bridge: "Filming the Longest Day" (in color unlike the movie) showing location shooting in 1959 along Caen Canal and at the Bridge (interestingly – this shows woodend decking on the bridge roadway versus the metal grate today). Great shots of Café Gondree, the control building, the bridge, etc.: link Imperial War Museum film from summer '44 showing the wrecked Horsa gliders, the pillbox to the north of the bridge, the HQ building to on the north side of the pillbox, and the bridge itself: link French ina.fr site with 11JUN44 footage – link and last a discussion of the defenses along the East and West side of the canal with maps for the trenches and other defenses from the Axis History forum: link |
