Is the big skirmish/small battle set still in the works? |
jocknroll | 31 Aug 2016 2:18 p.m. PST |
It is actually finished and has been for about six months. We got a little caught up in various things so are untangling ourselves so to speak. Thanks for not sending out the lynch mobs yet! :) |

Depressing. I haven't learned the last version, although it is my favorite set of contemporary rules, and now I must start all over again! |

there won't be much to 're-learn'. The changes bring the mechanisms and logic stream into line with Donnybrook and add an extra level of period detail. We have significantly modified dragoon capability to reflect the significance of the troop type instead of the current lamo-limbo land that they exist in. |

Ah expansion on the dragoons! Very interesting. Looking forward to reading that! |

We have also separated out a lot of 'non core' mechanisms and rules into a optional section this leaving the central thread leaner and more to the point. Players can then add as much nuance as they can cope with using the extra layers for period flavour. Learn to ride the bike before you try and jump the Grand Canyon on a unicycle so to speak. |

What. The only way to learn how to ride a bike. Is by jumping the grand canyon on a unicycle! |

haven't you tried that yet? |

I actually thought the rules currently handled dragoons about right. From my reading in this period, 1660-1720ish, they were basically infantry mounted on horses which obviously enabled them to move about quickly. Because of this they performed some other useful tasks such as reconnaissance, screening, some skirmishing etc. My experience is that most wargamers want them to be super troopers; after all they could ride horses and fight dismounted. That must make them elite! When in fact they were more like "jack's of all trades" but masters of none. They were paid less then the Horse and yes I know towards the middle part of WSS the distinction begin to blur between Regiments of Horse and dragoons. That's probably because armies could field more dragoons to horse due the cost. (Governments are notoriously cheap when it comes to funding armies.) All of the above was not meant as a rant but a prelude to my question. If dragoons deserve some other enhanced abilities that can't be handled with scenario specific rules what are they and what did miss my readings? |

OG – all good points. I am not an uber-trooper so don't be concerned about that. I think BLB2 had dragoons almost right but with careful reflection a couple of tweaks will get them just right. These involve a little more movement flexibility and some charge response options. The prominence of dragoons in the Irish campaigns between 1689-1691 offer substantive evidence of where and why these tweaks can be justified. |

Will the "swedish rules" be twiked? |
jocknroll | 07 Sep 2016 11:02 a.m. PST |
