Hello! You'll see my original post like 3 spots below this one. I'm only doing this because I'm new so I can't comment on my own post yet…. but I can make a new one! If anyone has played the games Battlestations: Pacific, or Wargame: AirLand Battle, those are the kinds of things I want to run. FFoT3 was the closest thing I could find for Wargame albeit it lacks aircraft and dedicated AAA like in the game. That's alright. But I'd also like to do things with carriers and aircraft and battleships and whatnot, Pacific 1943 preferably.

So yeah I'm new on the page and new in the wargaming community (I have some unpainted 40K Chaos Marines). I like FFoT3 but wish there were some uses for painted aircraft bases. If anyone knows anything, please let me know and thanks in advance!

I don't know the two games you refer to so can't comment there.

Do you want to do naval battles, air battles or land battles? In the miniatures world there aren't really games that do all 3.

FFT3 is a land game and would abstract air and fleets in to off board artillery in essence. Many naval games don't have any land component of any description. Air games just make ships AA platforms/targets and don't have ship versus ship rules. And so on.

If you want all three I think what you really want is a boardgame or to just keep playing the computer games.

Hi Swartz55

I play both of the PC games you mentioned so I have a fairly good idea of what you are aiming for.

I dont know of any set of wargames rules that will give you air, land and sea battles in the same set. If there were I would also be interested in giving them a look over.

Theres a set of rules called Blitzkrieg Commander II that makes provision for naval gunfire and rocket support. So if you use this set of rules your warships can support your troops on the ground. I think the Spearhead rule set also makes provision for this.

What you would then need to do is find another set of rules to deal with naval and air battles. Unfortunately I dont game naval or air (yet) so cant give you suggestions for rule sets there.

Another thing you need to consider is scale – if you game in 1/285 an aircraft carrier or battleship is going to be huge and will take up a big chunk of space.

What you could do is game each part of a major battle separately using different rules and scales e.g land battles in 6mm (1/285 or 1/300), naval vs naval in 1/2400 (including naval vs air) and air battles in 1/300 or 1/600.

That's doable and because its YOUR game and your minis you can pretty much do as you like.

I am using a similar approach, with my 1/300 aircraft that support my 1/300 WW1 armies also being able to attack the monitors and riverine craft. I made up rules for these air attacks, pretty basic stuff to be honest. If theres an air attack on ground or naval units I just roll a dice to see if the attackers get intercepted, and then if there is interception I just roll a dice and the highest dice shoots down the lower. As I said, pretty basic, and it gives some nice flavor to my games. And my opponent cant complain because I game solo.

Thanks guys! Yeah I guess with the scale, doing a full amphibious combat would not only be difficult but, even if I found rules, would probably take a long time. Doing the battles separately would be lots of fun, too, especially as part of a larger campaign. I read in the optional rules for FFT3 that there's some kind of ordinance system for aircraft, but I can't really remember the specifics. I'd just like to call in a plane for a turn or two, have it fly around the battlefield and either engage enemy aircraft or do some strafing runs. Perhaps I'll just do it where I have a naval battle to see if my forces can land, an air battle to see if I'll have air support, so on.

Jacques, how do you stay unbiased playing against yourself? I feel like I'd be making decisions based on information I really wouldn't have.

Also, if anybody here lives in the Genoa area of Northern Italy, I'll be just outside of town here for a while and I'd love to make some friends in a new country. I'm American, btw.

Thanks!

It took me three minutes to work out what that acronym meant…

Swartz55 –

I play to have fun and to get my toys on the table. I follow the rules and hope to get a nice game in. The question of bias has never yet been raised by my opponent…
