What happened to the minis and who owns them now?

Weasel29 Aug 2016 9:38 a.m. PST

I have never seen them post-White Wolf, I think they're lost in time.
I remember looking for them back in the day, and I never saw them online from any other company post-discontinuation of the game.

It was an amazing game btw, just didn't work out.

Heard White Wolf was purchased by Paradox Interactive. Contacting them is very difficult.

Weasel29 Aug 2016 10:01 a.m. PST

They were first acquired by CCP (the guys who make Eve Online), then by Paradox.

The rights to any given item could have dropped off at any point of that.

On top of that, the rights to the old game worlds now lie with Onyx Path Publishing, though I am uncertain whether they have all the rights or just a license to produce material.
Wikipedia suggests they hold the rights to Trinity, so I'd pursue that.

(Also, I know you're just asking about miniatures, but if you or someone else got the rules back in print in some form, I'll marry that person and make them sandwiches every morning for the rest of their life, just saying)

I saw some dodgy Chinese recasts of the Aberrant spawn, the Krillane and the rock chaps whose name escapes me. They were in a soft vinyl type material and were on sale at the Range in the UK. This was about 18 months ago. Didn't think to pick them up at the time and am kind of kicking myself now.

Looks like they're doing something with them.

Loved this game! I have thought many times of digging it out and running games at conventions.

Renamed Trinity Continuum: Æon

It's worth noting that this is the RPG, not the spin-off tabletop wargame. (the RPG is one of my favourite of all time but not the same thing)

Schogun29 Aug 2016 2:29 p.m. PST

@Weasel -- "Trinity Continuum" is the RPG; "Trinity Continuum: Æon" is the miniatures game. At least that's how I'm interpreting it.

Thanks for the info,
Ed

Weasel29 Aug 2016 2:57 p.m. PST

Schogun – ah okay, I had the impression Æon was a new edition of the RPG.

tnjrp29 Aug 2016 11:55 p.m. PST

I'm inclined to say that's exactly what it is. The Onyx Path site says

Trinity Continuum: Æon is the next edition of the game science fiction game Trinity, released in 1997. […] While the setting is quite similar to the original edition's, it has been updated to reflect recent changes in our world and refined so that every location, both on Earth and out among the stars, can be an exciting venue for heroic roleplaying.
Note the famous last words. OTOH Trinity Battleground did come out in 1997, at least according to BoardGameGeek… One might need to ask TOP about this to be sure.

Schogun30 Aug 2016 4:48 a.m. PST

I was wrong. Sadly…

From Onyx Path Publishing:

We are starting the rebirth of Trinity with the roleplaying games, and looking to other venues after we get that going.

Trying to create a minis game would require a huge shift in how Onyx functions, so it is not a small thing for us to do, but lots of us here are excited by the possibility. We just need to get the roleplaying part rolling along first.

Thanks!

Schogun – Cool,I sent Rich an email as well and he is at a convention.

Somewhere I still have my copy of Trinity Battleground (as well as a copy of the black plastic spiral-bound rulebook that says "Aeon" on the cover…)

Rules are interesting, but it's not a game that you can put a whole lot of minis on the table with.

Weasel30 Aug 2016 6:35 p.m. PST

yeah, it was for a few characters on each side, plus one or two "squads" of goons.

Don't have my box handy; is the author mentioned anywhere? Occasionally, that kind of thing reverts to same.

Designer is Chris McDonough, executive producer of World of Darkness for White Wolf Publishing.

My conjecture -- all rights reverted to White Wolf, then whoever bought it afterwards (Paradox? CCP?). Unknown if Onyx got the rights to the minis game as part of the deal…or wanted it. And if so, would they revise the current system or design their own.

On Wiki:

"Trinity: Battleground is a miniatures game based on the Trinity setting. It's notable for being White Wolf's first — and to date, only — foray into miniatures gaming. The rules were straightforward, and based off the Storyteller System. Converting characters between systems wasn't very difficult.

Unfortunately, Trinity suffered from lower sales than its World of Darkness counterparts. So despite its ease of playability, detailed setting and and how fun it was, a miniatures game based on Trinity turned out to be a financial failure. A mere six months after its initial 1998 release, it went out of print."

I recall more than a few friends that weren't intrigued by the background, but I'd be the first to suggest six months is no market development time at all.

Okay, I'll dig it out and take another look. ;->=

Oh, as far as the minis, were there only plastic/resin/whatever? I don't recall any metal, but it's been a LONG time.

No, I vaguely remember some metal minis available in blisters, with the plastic minis in the starter box.
