"Russia's latest military helicopter model will include active defense systems to deflect all existing heat-seeking missiles and circular-view radar, according to Russia state media reports. The upgraded Mi-28H "Night Hunter" helicopter gunship "will be virtually invulnerable to enemy fire," Sputnik News reported Friday.

The model will look similar to its predecessor, but the so-called "Super Hunter" stands out in that it will feature advanced active defense systems, including a circular-view radar previously installed on export models only. A laser system will fend off all existing heat-seeking missiles. The aircraft's maximum speed of 340 kilometers per hour will increase by 10 percent…"

Hey Armand,

In the USA, we have a special day just to pull tricks on people called "April Fools" day. It happens on April 1st.

Is August 26th, the Argentine equivalent to April Fools day? -Because this Sputnik article about invulnerable helos with magic lasers is very funny!

Sputnik can't even get the helo's designation correct. The Night Hunter's designation is Mi-28N, not "H".

Here is some correct info about the Mi-28N/Mi-28NE

The Russian N is an H. I suspect it's copied from a Russian source

No helicopter is invulnerable to fire. The cockpit area may be armoured up to 14.5mm, possibly 23mm, but the rest of it is as fragile as any other helicopter. 20mm+ rounds in the rotor head is still going to make your day awkward, and the rear rotors are always particularly vulnerable areas.

What they seem to be claiming is active defense against heat seeking missiles, which appears to be the ball radar on the mast, although I did notice that option is for export only…

cwlinsj26 Aug 2016 11:57 p.m. PST

Good observation about the H and N.

The mast mounted radar is a copy of the Apache Longbow mast-mounted radar, and is what they are defining as "circular view radar". It will now be included on domestic Mi-28Ns as well as export Mi-28NEs.

The laser system defense against heat seeking missiles is what is novel, and likely vaporware. If it can use lasers to destroy incoming missiles, that'd be a major coup as there is no current method to generate that much energy on a helo + have true 360 degree firing arc.

I think I'll continue to trust Defense Industry Daily (my link) over the claims of Sputnik.

Mako1127 Aug 2016 12:09 a.m. PST

Sure it will.

Probably can dodge Afghan, Iraqi, and Ukrainian farmers' rifle bullets too.

GarrisonMiniatures27 Aug 2016 1:28 a.m. PST

Russia is known to be capable of producing ten times as much superior equipment to the West on half the budget, so of course all the claims are true. We need to double our military expenditure at once to help offset what this helicopter is going to cost the US in future.

If it can use lasers to destroy incoming missiles

Its 'fend off', so I would imagine something that blocks guidance.

Bellbottom27 Aug 2016 2:04 a.m. PST

Is that going to stop Starstreak travelling at Mach 4?

VVV reply27 Aug 2016 3:16 a.m. PST

Since the Starstreak is a guided missile, the answer would be yes.

Nothing is invulnerable … you just have to use the right weapon …

Have they made them invulnerable to telephone poles and power lines, though?

No, it's a laser-proximity-fuze jammer. The Israelis have been installing them into their civilian airliners for about a decade now.

cwlinsj27 Aug 2016 12:04 p.m. PST

So it's the same system the US military has already been using on their aircraft…

So the Russians are announcing mast-mounted radar and anti-IR systems for 10 helicopters that they are building.

GeoffQRF28 Aug 2016 4:27 a.m. PST

..but not for themselves, these are for export

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP28 Aug 2016 8:06 a.m. PST

Yes, and they will probably export them to some countries like Iran … But it is all part of the worldwide arms trade … "money talks" …

ghostdog02 Sep 2016 5:48 p.m. PST

There are several current airborne laser systems that blind heat seeking missiles by pointing a laser against them
