…encounter.

"Two American fighter pilots who intercepted Syrian combat jets over northern Syria last week said they came within 2,000 feet of the planes without the Syrians aware they were being shadowed.

The tense encounter occurred after Syrian jets dropped bombs near a U.S. adviser team with Kurdish forces in northern Syria. The Pentagon warned Syria that American forces were authorized to take action to defend its troops. Syrian aircraft haven't dropped bombs in the area since then, and the U.S. military is no longer operating continuous combat patrols there.

"I followed him around for all three of his loops," one of the American pilots, a 38-year-old Air Force major, told USA TODAY Wednesday in the first detailed account of the incident. "He didn't appear to have any idea I was there."

Why was it tense? Sounds like it would have been a one-sided slaughter if the US had authorized any lethal force.

I think the US pilot was just waiting to give him the sign of 'International communication' from about 6ft and inverted?

Or maybe the Syrians called the bluff and went about their business of bombing whatever they damn well pleased without distraction.

Russians were providing top cover for the Syrians , US pilots hadn't detected them either … levels !

I was thinking the same BattlerBritain … Was his call sign Maverick ?

And as cw put it the US F-22s would have made short work of the Syrians. But just like with the recent Iranian "fun & games with boating" … No one in the US wants to start a big incident with blowing Syrian aircraft or IRGC boats into bits. At least for now.

It would remind me of the O.K. Corral … if any one shot … all Hell would break loose … But it seems the Syrians would have been "bushwhacked" in this case. By the time they knew anything … they'd have been blasted from the sky. And then diplomatically and politically the Bleeped text would hit the fan …
