Just finished reading the rules for Retro Raygun and I like the simple fast mechanics and emphasis of playing the game. Of course the background screams for cool terrain. Now making otherworldly hills, jungle, ruins and such is not so much an issue. But what about making a rocket as an objective, or a death ray projector, or some other Pulp Sci-Fi looking thing. Suggestions for scratch building or readily available kits/models and other recommendations appreciated.

I'm a big fan of Bob Murch's work, particularly for a death ray. Check out his "Wierd Menace" category here: link

which includes Dr. Promethius and his Death Ray: pulpfigures.com/products/view/54

and Dr. Promethius' electro laboratory: pulpfigures.com/products/view/56

You can do something with one of these if you have a Michael's craft store near you.

Today on my morning walk one of the neighbors was having a garage sale (unusual for a Friday) and they had a lot of toys for sale. Among them was a toy called Skylanders Flynn's Ship. I'd never seen one before. It is a beautiful VSF-style flying ship sitting on a cloud. Because the one I bought from them was missing a number of pieces I got mine for $2 USD, but when I got it home I looked it up on the internet, I found that it could be purchased in new or like new condition for about $25. USD Neat piece that would be perfect for a Death Ray.

Michael's has a great birdhouse on the shape of a rocket… it just screams retro sci-fi:

Yea, definitely need an anti-spaceship, laser-disintegrator, ray gun.

You should be able to make that from various bits, e.g. a rod, or pen, or a piece of wire. Add various sized plastic or wooden beads to it for the energy burst to accumulate, or be magnified in.

Make a cross out of styrene, or popsicle sticks for the base, and then use something to mount your laser weapon on.

Paint it bright colors, or metallic, just for fun.

Got to get a couple of those bird houses. Plus Michaels would be a good place to find other bits and bobs to use to scratch build terrain and buildings.

You could also just "tart" up an existing flak gun, but scratch-building might be cheaper, and more fun.

This gentleman focuses on VSF, but that really means that you can just skip the rivets:

RSU thanks for posting the link to your wonderful scratch built VSF rocket. That design minus rivets and a more Post Modernist fin design would do the trick indeed. thumbs up
