A wonderful map of France and Belgium prior to WWI.

'These maps (tiled together below to create a larger image) were produced by the British Ordnance Survey in the years just prior to the outbreak of the First World War (1912-1914). The British knew the war was coming and were updating their topographic map coverage of the area, using the relatively new concept of contour lines to indicate elevations. However, they were planning for a traditional war of movement, not the stalemate of trench warfare it turned out to be. As a result, these maps were not made at a detailed enough scale to be useful other than for planning the logistics of things like supply and communication over very large areas."

Zooming in to see the contour lines are just Wow!

Cool! So many familiar names--Ramillies, Rocroi, Waterloo, Dunkerque, the Somme--a much fought over borderland!

Very nice.

The Middle East maps will prove useful for ancient/medieval periods.

Thanks for this.

Broglie That's crazy.

Why is that crazy? I live just outside Brussels.

It's compliment! To have a map with that level of detail. Outstanding

A great find, thanks for posting the link. A similar set of maps for central Europe, albeit at 1:200,000 scale, can be found at:

Very cool! bookmarked under WW1 ideas for later use

How far apart are the contour lines? 80ft? Can't find that anywhere, and it's kinda important!
