That's cool! I've been reporting on the day-to-day attacks there as part of a '100 Years Ago Today' thread on another website. It's neat to see somebody gaming this.

I visited Bagamoyo in '96. Nice little town then. Lovely little Boma and the house which Emin Pasha feel from off King George st.
I've meant to play this battle for nearly 16 years.
Thank you for posting.

Great stuff… but I am reasonably sure it should be 'Bagamoyo', not 'mayo'? I used to live in 'Old Bagamoyo Road' in Dar a few years back, so unless the name was different back in 1916?

Hi Greenleader, same place. Google searches bring the same place up with both spellings. Most of the old books I can find use the spelling I have used. No idea why it might be different but lots of spellings have been changed in Africa recently, perhaps trying to be more authentic to their roots?

Yes – interesting. Alas, names have become very political in Africa of late, with millions wasted in changing them. In South Africa, for example, since 1994, Mafeking has been renamed 'Mafikeng' and then (after another re-think) 'Mahikeng'. One wonders which 'traditional, original African name' it will be renamed next?

Been to Zululand recently and was very confused when the game reserve we thought we were going to had become Infolozi not Unfolozi! Had a great time mind you.

You should have let me know you were coming, Roger – always a bottle of whisky ready to be drunk at my spot.

Next time Greenleader
