It's getting close to that time of year again, as Battleground 2016 takes place on Saturday November 26th, at the Queen's Campus Sports Hall in Stockton-on-Tees, TS17 6BH, running from 10am until 3pm. This show is organised and run by Pendraken Miniatures with help from Middlesbrough Gamers Club. Entry to the show is only £3 for adults, with free entry for the rest of the family. Currently we're looking to have 37 traders attending, but there may be one or two changes to last year's lineup. We'll have all of the traders confirmed by October and we'll update at that point. A current list of the expected traders can be found here: link This year we're expanding the games section of the show, as well as increasing the number of participation games on offer. We're waiting on the final details of some of our games, so we'll keep updating the lists here: link We've always enjoyed having living history groups at our event, with the Durham Pals and 68th DLI returning for 2016. We've also added the Lonestar re-enactment group to this year's event, bringing a selection of 8th Cavalry equipment for people to look at and try on. Last year's Tabletop Sale was a great success and was fully booked up all day long. For only £1.00 GBP per half hour slot, you can sell as much as you like, with no commission at all! You can deal directly with the buyers, answer any questions they may have, and also keep an eye on your goods. Once your time is up (or better still, you've sold everything!), you can walk away, cash in hand, and enjoy the rest of the show! This year we'll try and add a couple more tables, but please make sure to book in early if you can. Bookings can be made through the contact section of the website: link As well as the main Battleground website here: battlegroundshow.co.uk you can also follow our Facebook page for the latest updates: link Don't forget to tell your friends about the event and we hope to see you there! |

We've got a great group of re-enactment groups attending Battleground this year, including: Durham Pals The Durham Pals are a group that portray the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in the Great War. Their primary aim is to commemorate the current 100th anniversaries of World War One. They are involved with events at locations like Beamish Open Air Museum, giving talks regarding various aspects of the War and also participating in commemorative events. The group is locally based but has membership across the country. More information can be found at their website durhampals.org.uk Lonestar Group An 1876 era 8th Cavalry display group featuring original items from the period. People can handle original weapons and try on some of the kit, whilst learning about left with the US cavalry during the era. We talk about the Battle of Little Big Horn and the wider 1876 campaign. For 2016 we have added a full US Cavalry saddle, complete with tack, equipment and personal kit. More info about what we do can be found on our website: thelonestar.yolasite.com Vanguard Led and founded by William Mckenzie, a seasoned re-enactor, the group ‘Vanguard' are a North-Eastern based medieval battle re-enactment group, operating out of Hartlepool but enjoying battle events throughout the UK. The group re-enacts the battles and combat of the medieval period, primarily taking up the arms and armour of 13th century England. However, with the group meeting and practicing every week – and due to the style of medieval weapons and armour – the group is physically equipped to adapt and enjoy participating in battle events set from early 11th century to mid-14th century. Continue down this road, past the entrance to Stockton Riverside College, until you reach another roundabout. Turn right here, signposted 'University of Durham'. As you reach another roundabout, the venue will be to your right, a white and grey building with the curved sports hall roof visible and 'Durham University Sports' written on the side.

I will be attending one of my favourite shows on Saturday – and it is only a couple of miles from my house! Battleground 2016 is being staged at the Queens Campus Sports Hall in Stockton and as a disabled person the venue is superb. The venue is flat, has good disabled parking and a good disabled toilet. The show itself is staged all in one place – the main sports hall – and the floor is not too hard on my feet. Another plus point for me with my dodgy eyesight is the lighting is good- so I can see what I am buying or what game I am playing! There is also room to move around easily – at some shows a big problem is manoeuvring around groups of people chatting without demolishing a trade stand or a wargame! A good attraction at the show is the cake stall – the chocolate orange muffins are superb – with the attached "wargame" with edible prizes. So roll on Saturday – I already have a list of things I want to buy and games I wish to play – and as a final thought what makes the show a favourite for me should by and large make it a must for anyone in the area with an interest in wargaming or thinking of taking up a new hobby. More details of the show can be found on the show website – battlegroundshow.co.uk |
