A situation arose that's clearing up

A Melee resulted in a unit retreating 2bw but this ment the unit passed though an artillery behind it but not clearing it

Doses the unit pass though the rear and the artillery and isn't effected by the retreat
And also dose the winner have to follow up 1bw

How would you do it? I'm thinking of 28mm skirmish, but I'm open to other things.

Can you have the Zekes as a player controlled faction?

I'm cranking through the book for the second time this month because it's a compelling read and my mind is racing with possibilities,

Hey, I just got hit by the bug!

Gaming World War Z? Sounds like the sort of thing Undead States of America was written for. They have a couple of expansions, too, covering things like zombie fighting in different climates and, should you so desire, different time periods, such as ancients.

I admit that last option was enough to make me buy the rules, but typically, after a good read through, I failed my gaming procrastination roll, and never got in a game. Worth a look if you fancy a bit of zombie mass combat, rather than small skirmishes imho.

Yeah know, The thing I HATED about that book was the ending.

Spoiler! But Bleeped text? The zombies could'nt go up stairs? That was really stupid. It made the whole thing stupid.

I've seen the Battle of Yonkers played at a convention or two---was it Moe the Great who did that one??

Balthazar Marduk24 Aug 2016 10:58 a.m. PST

…The book ends with Todd Wainio standing on the bank of the Hudson River tho.

Thanks for the type Wosamog, I'll check it out.

john lacour24 Aug 2016 12:57 p.m. PST

Well, yeah, it ends like that. But the punch line was that they discovered that the zeds could not go up stairs, so everyone just stayed on upper floors and made homes that has lots of steps.

Does anyone not think that was lazy and dumb writing?

thorr66624 Aug 2016 2:27 p.m. PST

Cows also can't navigate stairs. Coincidence?

The big e24 Aug 2016 3:11 p.m. PST

You are correct about the Battle of Yonkers. Moe the Great just put it on at Broadsword last Saturday. He is the man to ask about mass zombie games. His uses modified FOW rules.

"Cows also can't navigate stairs. Coincidence?"

Apparently neither can Daleks… ;-)

And I don't see how stairs would even slow down a zombie horde, considering that they went right over the top of that really high wall in the movie.

Ladders would be better than stairs anyway… ;-)

For mass battles with Zeds vs military, how about Ambush Z or the All Things Zombie mass battle rules?

MacrossMartin24 Aug 2016 6:48 p.m. PST

Zeds could go up stairs in the book. You're forgetting the tactic used by the K9's of luring Zed's out of skyscraper windows to fall to their (un)deaths. It was just that they are much slower at getting upstairs, and can't climb (up trees, or ladders, for instance).

I'd say the 'can't climb' thing is in line with established zombie folklore. If you prefer zed's that can climb, then go for it; the apocalypse is whatever you make of it! ;)

I always thought the first 'proper' battle between the re-equipped US Army and Zed – when they form square and hammer away, piling up thousands of Zeds – would make an epic convention game, if only for the sheer spectacle of all those zombies. But, I would want to see literally at least 1000 zombies on the table!

john lacour24 Aug 2016 8:40 p.m. PST

No, you are wrong, friend. I will get the book…

basileus6624 Aug 2016 11:54 p.m. PST

I think that Brooks wrote that Zs weren't good at climbing, and that it is why at the end one of the characters has become a real state developer that builts condos in high platforms, accesible from the ground only through retractable ladders (which wouldn't make sense if a Z couldn't climb at all, for starters).

The retractable ladder keeps the non zombies from gaining access to you home and stuff as well. It is a simple and inexpensive security feature.

Now this is a topic I like. I've run three games passed on the book. Ambush Z works great for some of the smaller stories involving a few people trying to get away, but if you want some massed zombie battle, like Yonkers, Hope or the battle for Kiev I use a modified set of FOW. The Undead States takes too long and doesn't give you that mass zombie/mass shooting feel.

Usually for Yonkers I use 1,100 15mm zombies and I am in the process of putting together 1,000 more.

It just doesn't look right if you don't feild enough Zombies.

Now thats what I call a book report!

Lion in the Stars27 Aug 2016 12:57 p.m. PST

Man, zombies are as bad as Zulus or Pathans… You *never* have enough!

Moe the Great30 Aug 2016 12:14 p.m. PST

Exactly!!
