SESSION 1: TROUBLE ON THE ROAD

It had been a long trek to the Keep on the borderlands but Halee didn't mind. She thought she's planed the perfect heist but it didn't work out that way. Caught trying to fence some stolen jewelry, she had fled Wense in search of anonymity. Now she is tagging along with a merchant caravan travelling to the borderlands for trade.

picture

The people in the merchants' caravan are mostly a docile lot and she's been entertaining the idea of maybe making a little here and a little there on the way but has decided the better of it. She doesn't need any extra attention just now.

The merchant is a tall thin man in his middling 40's. With greying hair and a slight lisp, Roddric is just focused on getting to the Keep and trading out his goods. The Keep has been good to Roddric over the years, always in need of fresh provisions and the opportunity to take a back load of farm produce or furs making the trip profitable in both directions. There have been some worries lately though. There had been a number of raids on travelers along the road through the borderlands and the Castellan has not been able to actively protect the roads like he used too. Roddric has a young worker with him, Wilfred, to help tend to the horses and carts and four guards to stave off trouble. The guards are lazy though, only interested in getting paid and sitting around a fire and talking about how great they are as warriors.

There is another man in the group too, Ansic. He is quiet, keeping mostly to himself, but clearly a man of immense strength. Armed with a long sword, he is fully armored in chain mail and further protected by a large wooden shield. Halee is sure that this guy can look after himself if any trouble arises.

picture

That morning had been like any other on the trip. There was a slight chill in the morning air but Halee knew it would warm up. After having breakfast, the caravan set off.

There was a gentle breeze bringing with it the faint smell of spring. Small gusts of wind moved the grass, swaying it here and there.

Halee is walking beside one of the wagons when she hears a scream of a woman coming from a small copse of trees.

Spinning around, the rogue pulls out her bow and scans the horizon for trouble.

A woman and a man, with wild hair and tattered clothes come running from the trees directly towards the caravan. Behind them four goblins give chase. The goblins are filthy little beasts, brandishing sharp wicked blades and evil hatred in their eyes as they try to run down the two humans.

picture

ROUND 1A – GOBLIN ATTACK
Initiative: Party 6, Goblins 9

• The first goblin tries to grapple against the male human runaway but he misses.
• The second goblin draws his short bow and shoots at the human runaway but in the confusion his shot goes wide.
• The third goblin runs up and successfully grapples the fleeing woman.
• The fourth goblin moves up around the northwest and draws his bow and fires at the nearest man at arms. Range is just under 120ft, he lines up his shot and fires but it thuds into the shield of the guard who grimaces at the idea of being shot to death by a mob of dirty goblins.

picture

ROUND 1B – SAVE THEM!!!

• Roddric yells at the men at arms to form up a defensive position, for the humans to run to safety and for Wilfred to get to safety.
• Halee moves up 30ft and lines up a shot at the furthest goblin but misses.
• Ansic double moves 60ft towards the goblins and yells "Get to me, I'll protect ya!"
• Karla attempts to break free from the goblins grasp but fails.
• Torn between saving his wife and getting away from the goblins, Odbart goes back to save his wife. He attempts to grapple the goblin and succeeds.

picture

ROUND 2A – GOBLINS GET READY TO FIGHT

• The goblins can see the big, burly human in full chain mail bearing down on them.
• The northern most goblin backs up 15ft and fires an arrow at Ansic but he misses.
• The eastern most goblin moves to get a clear shot at the fighter. He fires but also misses.
• The grappled goblin releases his grip on Karla and attempts to break free of Odbart's grip. He succeeds and grapples Odbart.
• The last goblin has had enough of Odbart's struggling and, drawing his short sword, stabs at the grappled human. He hits Odbart in the right shoulder for 3pts of damage, badly wounding the human and dropping his total hit points down from 6 to 3.

picture

ROUND 2B – ODBART IS FREE

• Shrieking for the goblins to let go of her husband Karla attempts to grapple the goblin who has hold of her husband, she succeeds and breaks her husband free.
• Ansic charges the now grappled goblin and swings wildly with his long sword. He hits the pinned goblin in the centre of the chest and does 13pts of damage, killing it immediately.
• Halee moves forward 30ft, putting herself at short range with the eastern most goblin. She fires an arrow but fails to land the shot.
• Odbart 5ft steps back, keeping himself between the goblin and his wife.

picture

ROUND 3A – THE TEST

• With their first casualty, the goblins must test morale. The roll a 7 on 2d6 and pass.
• The eastern most goblin fires an arrow at Halee and hits her in the right leg, bypassing her armour and dealing 1pt of damage.
• The northern most goblin attacks Ansic with his short bow but misses.
• The last goblin 5ft steps forward towards Ansic and tries to hit him but his blade is easily deflected by Ansic's armour.

picture

ROUND 3B – ENTER THE BARBARIAN

• Out of nowhere Ansic and Halee hear a mighty roar and suddenly a beserking barbarian comes running from the forest to attack the northern most goblin.
• Wielding two short swords the barbarian, Cord, slices at the goblin. Swinging wildly, he hits with his short sword ‘Otis' piercing the goblins left leg and hitting a vital artery doing 7pts of damage. The goblin shrieks and goes down.
• Ansic takes an overhand swing at the goblin next to him, protecting the two serfs, but misses.
• Odbart and Karla take a withdrawal move away from their tormentor and move towards the safety of the shield wall formed by the guards.
• Halee fires an arrow at the eastern most goblin but misses.

picture

ROUND 4A – RESOLVE
• Now down to ½ their numbers the goblins must test morale again and do so with a roll of 2 on 2d6 (they have a morale of 7).
• The first one stabs at Ansic, desperately trying to cut down the large human but he cannot penetrate the chain mail armour.
• The second fires an arrow at Halee and hits her in the left shoulder for 4pts. Halee winces with pain.

picture

ROUND 4B – SAFETY

• Odbart and Karla double move back, almost reaching the safety of the shield wall. Roddric is shouting encouragement to them, "Quick, quick come over here!"
• Cord continues to rage and charges and flanks the goblin attacking Ansic. He savagely stabs the goblin in the chest for 11pts killing the goblin. As it falls to his knees, he places a sword on each shoulder and decapitates the goblin shouting "Don't get ahead of yourself!!!"
• Halee snarls and releases an arrow at the remaining goblin but just misses the little beast as it ducks and the arrow narrowly passes its head.
• Ansic smiles and gives Cord a big thumbs up and then charges off after the remaining goblin but he misses the slippery little fiend.

picture

ROUND 5A – PLUCKLY LITTLE FELLA

• Tough to the bitter end, the last goblin drops his short bow and draws its short sword. It stabs at Ansic trying to bring down the giant but misses.

picture

ROUND 5b – THE END
• Ansic swings his long sword at the goblin but misses the slippery little devil.
• Cord charges. He wildly swings his short sword and hits him in the groin for 10pts of damage. The goblin drops and screams as his life dwindles away.

picture

AFTER THE BATTLE

The heroes approach each other after the battle and exchange a few well mets and the odd high five.

Karla and Odbart run over and thank them profusely for saving their lives.

Roddric and the guards join the little party but they are ignored by the heroes, especially Cord and Ansic who are too busy swapping stories of how they just slaughtered 4 goblins.

Halee moves towards the back of the group, not wanting to be noticed.

Fun read.

Enjoying the reports immensely, but not familiar with the Pathfinder rules. Where can I see them? Would like to put a character into the adventure, but don't know the mechanics of determining their characteristics. Thanks. Tom

Tom, there is a Pathfinder SRD (system resource documents) that has all of the rules, but little fluff.

Tom – I'd actually recommend:
link

It will bring up the Paizo websitesite with access to all the needed books & entries broken down into small consumable subjects right there.

The d20pfsrd site Darkest Star linked to mixes in 3rd party material and expands the reach of the books they access… granted they label the 3rd party stuff as such, but since the game DEW is running is limiting to Core Rule Book only, it may confuse a new player to be faced with all the choices that do not apply instead of only those choices that do.

Just my $.02 USD

Tom don't stress too much about the details mate.

Very cool and a nice dramatic battle. My boy did good :)

I'm hoping to get back to my campaign this week, once Dungeon Scum is finally done.

Good ol' Cord!

Love the pic. That's pretty much just how I imagined him :)
