I ran Raphia at Partizan, yesterday, with more minis and on new cloth mats.
There are more pics and a full account of the battle on my blog: link Best, Simon |

As impressive as the rules set, our group loves those rules. I do my games though in 15mm, I can't afford those 28s. Fabulous looking battle! |

Seriously impressive Simon – loved the account of the plucky wargaming maestro. We often assume our opponents are all knowing but should remember they are only human and can overlook things. Fortune favours the brave/bold. Garry |

Thanks all! He was a lucky young chap; but then the young do tend to be lucky in my experience. His attack went in at the junction between two commands which is often a vulnerable point, in warfare. |

Fantastic stuff. How big was the field of battle? |

Thanks chaps- hi to my Stateside mates! The playing surface was around 13' long, plus the dunes. |

I went past twice Simon and each time you were busy keeping the many players in check, so sorry I didn't stop for a chat. I'm amazed by your stamina in continuing to put on amazing games, it must take do much effort and preparation. The players all seemed to be enjoying them selves – btw I think you should have some sort of indemnity insurance to prevent anyone from making a large personal injury claim with all those pointy pikes ready to impail one of them. Keep up the good work. Barry |

Hi Barry I saw you from afar but was chatting with someone and couldn't run over. The pikes are pretty blunt. One day (when it is complete) I have visions of setting out the phalanx and lying down on it in the manner of an Indian fakir. I reckon it would be safe… if not I'd probably make the evening news! Thanks BigRed |

I really love your models, your basing, the size of your units. But folds in a table cloth? And playing cards on the table? Wouldnt traditional terrain boards being much more spectacular? |

Thanks chaps! Alas Decebalus on the eve of the battle I realised that I'd lost (!) a number of the terrain boards I had been planning to use, so was forced to improvise. Also the underlay I had intended to use turned out to be too short, hence the creases. That said, I plan to use cloths rather than boards for most of my future games. They are extremely easy to carry, look better than most boards and it is very easy to slide the units across them, much easier work than lifting the minis across a traditional textured terrain board. I can store an almost unlimited number of cloths, whereas terrain board take up a huge amount of storage space. The playing cards are a fundamental part of the game and add considerably to the excitement as they are flung onto the table, so they are there to stay!* They are taken away at the end of every turn, so there's a window for photography. *Although some heretics choose to use chits, or even (shudder) D10s. ;-) |
