If all your historical wargames had to be set in a single nation, which nation would you choose? (Real nations only, please.) |

France. Out of patriotism I would like to say England, but it's been a bit dull war wise for the last few hundred years. France has the lot. |

America. The issue of more than one nation was settled definitively in 1865. The similarly named continents, however, do contain more than a single nation. That may be what causes a possible confusion. Rick |

Germany. Or perhaps "the Germanies." Good for everything from Ancients through Cold War Gone Hot. You have to live without hoplites, elephants and horse archers, but if you do all your gaming in the Rhine and Danube valleys, you really save on terrain. |

It's a tough choice between Russia: 1941-44 & 1812 or USA: AWI & ACW. |

The issue of more than one nation was settled definitively in 1865. No. As TR famously pointed out, what the ACW settled was the question of whether the proper usage was "The United State is" or "The United States are". It did not eliminate Mexico or any of the other independent nations on the continent. Indeed, a new one appeared two years after the war. |

Hmmmmm, given historical precedents, pretty hard to choose between these four: Britain France Germany Italy I'd probably flip a coin between France and Italy, since they were invaded by others, or fought so many wars within their own borders. |

If by set in a single nation you mean place where the battle was fought I would have to say Russia. |
Gunfreak | 23 Aug 2016 5:25 a.m. PST |
The title said nation. Not geographic place. So those saying Germany. Can only game 1870 and beyond. As there was no german nation before that. The USA didn't exist until after AWI. So that leaves you with 1812, ACW and Indian wars after the 1780s (oh and the mighty whiskey rebellion and pig war) And of course the notion of nation in it self didn't properly exist until the last 300 ish years. So no medieval or ancients. |
John the Greater | 23 Aug 2016 5:47 a.m. PST |
China. They certainly meet the definition of nation going back at least to the Qin (Ch'in) Dynasty (some might say Xia, but that is a stretch) |

Gun freak. Nation is a complicated concept, but it is not synonymous with state. Nation state usually means a state uniting people of a common identity, whether it be linguistic, racial, cultural or a combination of all three. With regard to your comment on those who chose Germany, if you want a state, what about the Heiliger Romisches Reich Deutscher Nation? 962-1806. Seems to fit even your criteria? Anyway, do we need thought police on a bit of fun like this? My choice would be Polish! Mollinary |
