In my quest to find a 15mm Urban mat that wasn't covered with Craters or shattered roads, I came across the Game Matz 10mm Urban mat. This looked good to me but of course I wanted 15mm. After a few emails back and forth Game Matz let me know that they can print custom mats and enlarge/reduce any of their existing range to fit my mat size/ Game scale needs. And the best part was that there was no extra charge for this.

GameMatz has two Mat types, Vinyl and what they call their Pro Matz. Not being a fan of vinyl I went with their Pro Mat. I had read some bad reviews that this turns out to be very dark but I didn't see that with my mat.

I ordered a 4x8 mat and received it in less than two weeks. The mat has a nice rubber/neoprene type of feel on the back and is about 1/8" thick or about Half of my F.A.T. Mats thickness.

The front has a soft cloth like feel and the printing is crisp.

Here are some pictures of the mat and the Battle of Yonkers game.

Over all I really like the mat. The quality is good and I really had a good experience with the guys at the company. The price was on the high side, but for a 4x8 I don't think it was that much higher. The $25 USD shipping seemed high, although a week later they offered free shipping in the US as part of a sale. DOH!

I recommend giving them a look next time you're in the market for a game mat.

Also, there were other companies I wanted to try but as stated before, no one had a 15mm Urban mat that didn't look like a war zone.

(The game was played the Broad Sword 2 convention up in Hamilton CA over the weekend.)

as in Yonkers, New York!? If so, that's hilarious, my home town!!

Wow! I counted parts of 52 stands of zombies – 280 zombies. That's a ton of zombies!

PeterH,

Battle of Yonkers is a reference to a major "battle" with zombies in the "World War Z" book. And yes, it is in New York!

Actually this horde has over 1,000 zombies, but they were never all in the shot at once. Over 200 Bases.

Yes, this was the WWZ Battle of Yonkers from the book.

What ruleset did you use?

He mentioned a modified version of Flames of War.

Moe the Great24 Aug 2016 10:08 a.m. PST

Yup. Flames of War. There really isn't much Modification. The zombies are conscripts that don't shoot. They also get a "German Storm trooper move", which if they pass there skill test move an extra 4".

The biggest changes are that the US troops must follow the book. No hiding in buildings, on buildings etc. At a point they start taking test to see if their ammo is running out etc.

Works out pretty good for some mass zombie killing, but with the horde pretty much always gaining ground. Gives players a sense of doom that grows over the course of the game.

Near the end when people start running out of ammo or running away, the front goes from a mass line of fire sometimes rolling over 100 dice a turn, to a few units rolling a dozen or so dice per turn.
