Our annual Big Game on the weekend of the 72nd anniversary of this battle was fought out in the more friendly environs of my back porch. Although some of us had played the smaller Soulagny scenario we had yet to have fielded two entire battalions and two squadrons of Shermans in a game that encompassed both objectives.
The scenario, written by Paddy Green and Richard de Ferrars for the Battlefront WWII rule set, tackles a little known engagement that was part of the drive to close the Falaise Pocket in Normandy. We battled it out on a six by nine foot table with 20mm toys (mine for the Germans and half the Canadians and Phong Nguyenho who contributed a Sherman squadron and battalion of Canadians).

Here is a link to the full AAR:

And here are a few (of the many!) photos:

Gorgeous game. Love the terrain.

Always a highlight to see your games. Glad you took picture of group – really personalizes a report.
How big are the army blankets that you use? Do you sew together?

Bill Slavin21 Aug 2016 2:04 p.m. PST

Thanks, Brucka.
The two ground sheets are about 5' X 8' (the larger maybe 6'X 8'). I don't sew them together – just try and disguise the join with some fields and verges.

Looks pretty amazing game. The terrain is spot on and the AAR makes great reading.

An inspirational game.

Realizing the scenario says no air support, but why not that day?

Bill Slavin21 Aug 2016 6:33 p.m. PST

I don't know! You would have to ask the scenario designers. Post it on the Battlefront forum and they will answer, I'm sure.

I think the Air Support was pounding Falaise to the south. Weather might have been a bit iffy.

I've just had a look at Google maps and I think the place is Soulangy (not Soulagny) north of Falaise just to the west of the modern N158. Seems to match Richard De Ferrars map anyway.

Yep, Soulangy. I corrected the blog but a bit late to go back and correct this post!
