I normally game Napoleonic sea battles in 1/1200th scale with Langton Miniatures. I've been thinking though about doing some Errol Flynn "Captain Blood" or "Sea Hawk" style fights, 2-3 ships a side. I was planning on using Langton's "Anglo-Dutch Wars" lines for the ships but I am in need of rules. I don't think that my Napoleonic rules will do a good job, for starters I don't really have ship stats and also let's face it, the ships are different. So, what would be some good rules for a late 17th Century sea fight? |

Written specifically for the period, Galleys & Galleons is perfect for this sort of thing. |

Thanks, I was kind of looking for something more involved. I don't mind charts. What do people use for 17th Century rules? |

Peter Pig's pirate era rule set, 'Pieces of Eight', has rules for small naval actions. |

Post Captain Designed for individual to small squadron per side. "Meat" is subjective but for me it has the perfect balance. Guns are never grouped more than 3 for firering and crew boxes are about 20 with individual officers. Have no experience with Pieces of Eight. Joe |

Thanks all you have been a big help. I have been looking at "Post Captain" for my Napoleonics. |

There is a rule set called tiller and whipstaff that I hear portrays the period very well. It is designed for larger fleet actions, but could maybe work on a smaller scale? |

I am no expert on the period but it is pretty easy to design your own stats in Post Captain. Cannons are by pound of shot and are either single or 3 to a group. They have every type of sail set up I have ever heard of including cutters, brigs and gunboats. Each MP is a knot so you know your speed as well. Joe |
