"Danish cav. Buff or no buff" Topic

Reading the GNW compendium.
It says: we don't know for sure, if all regiments used the cuirass, if they used them with/with out buff coats. Or had the buff coats under the jackets.

I know its classic to paint the buff. But i hate buff! And I'm going to have to paint 12 squadrons(72 figures)

I hear you. I hate buff too. I would shake it up and do a few without. It's your army!

If you look through the League of Augsburg Fighting Talk Forum there is a lot of discussion on this. There is ample evidence that in action in 1710 they wore the cuirass over the buff coat. That being said, a Swedish spy reported the coat colors of the Danish cavalry in Scania, and some sources indicate that the cuirass was worn over the coat at times. See the articles and plates in the Danish magazine "Chakoten" which was translated in Dan Schorr's old "Northern Wars" site and Orjan Martinsen's "Tacitus" GNW site for further discussion. There is also a good article on the Battle of Gadebusch in an issue of "Chakoten" which can be downloaded from the "Chakoten" website. It has a large number of uniform plates, some o which show the coat over the buff coat and over the uniform coat.

The info I have (for the WSS rather than the GNW but Danes fought hard in both) is that they wore either the buff coat or the uniform coat (a White-Grey colour) with the cuirass worn over the coat for rank and file and sometimes under the coat for officers.

Pre 1709 however they may, have only had a front plate issued due to shortages.

there is also a note that a Danish Buff coat was a prized battlefield find due to its quality.

I am going to paint a Danish army for 1710. I decided to paint most of them with buff coat, others in grey coat. My feeling is that whatever you do you are right, so paint them as you like!

Depends on how often they went to the gym, I;d imagine…

I painted mine with the grey coat for the WSS but buff for those that fought in the GNW, reasoning that the better uniforms would have been kept for the line and the regional troops being given the lesser equipment.

MM – could you explain what you mean by Danish line and regional troops?

These coats were elkskin and very very highly prized especially if you could capture a Danish trooper of horse.
