I have a question for you.

With the release of the Imperial Skies rules how many here would play at least a game of Imperial Skies?

Or here's another question next year in my area I plan on running some Imperial Skies games so if you were in the area would you take part in the game Yes or No?

And I would like to know why be it yes or be it no.

I want to here what you have to say.

I'd be a yes (unfortunately I'm pretty sure I'm not in your area), but I have Aeronef and a ton of ships (still unpainted), so trying another rule set would be a no brainer for me.

Captain Gideon16 Aug 2016 9:01 a.m. PST

Thanks boy wundyr x might I ask how many Aeronef ships both painted and unpainted you have?

I recently made a count of my Aeronef ships and I have close to 1,000 ships spread between 17 Nation's and the Pirates and some Merchant ships.

But this took a lot of time and effort on my part and I'm still not done.

I'd love to try it. I wasn't able to participate in the KS, but I'm interested all the same.

boy wundyr x16 Aug 2016 10:01 a.m. PST

The painted bit is easy, as I've only gotten as far as cleaning some, maybe 30. The grand total is probably 150, maybe 200.

Captain Gideon16 Aug 2016 10:27 a.m. PST

I agree on the painting since the minis are easy to paint once you know what colors you want to paint the ships.

200 sounds very good so could you tell me what Nations you have ships from like Germany and Great Britain for example?

Also do you have a Favorite Nation?

Cap'n, there were no regular sized gauges in our book, but there's a download on the FB which does not require signing up for same, so I'll be trying shortly.

Once I give it a try, I'll know if I want to try again. ;->=

I took part in the Kickstarter so I would be a yes if a game was near me. Still trying to decide on how many ships I would need to start.

Rudysnelson16 Aug 2016 11:16 a.m. PST

No and I do not plan to stock it. If interest and special orders are asked about then I may order it.

Captain Gideon16 Aug 2016 11:42 a.m. PST

Doug I found that out but I'm getting a set of the turning gauges as part of the KS.

Tom with regards to how many ships you need may I suggest going to Brigade's site where you can get starter packs.

For example the British vs French pack has 2 Cruiser's and 8 smaller ships per side this might be the best starting force for 2 players.

Rudy any real reason why you wouldn't want to try Imperial Skies?

Also are there any people in your area who might've an interest in Imperial Skies?

Because if you did and they knew how to play you could ask them to run a demo game to attract people.

For example in Milwaukee the designer of StarBlazers ran games at a local game store to attract attention for his game.

And living in San Francisco we only really have one game store left in the city, but there's a few scattered throughout the Bay Area but I've seen people do that for various games so it is possible.

But nothing will happen unless you start things.

I have a few dozen Aeronefs painted, and another few dozen unpainted. Never found a rule set that really floated my boat…

boy wundyr x16 Aug 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

I have just about everyone, although in my setting, some of the 'nef aren't operated by their "official" nation, the South Americans in particular have been reassigned as I see fit, pirates mainly. I have the USA and CSA still split so the Americans have been divided up, and I'm still not sure if I'll switch the Germans for the Austro-Hungarians, the AH stuff feels a bit more Prussian to me. I may even split some and not others, and swapping turret styles as needed.

I'm not sure if I'm just sentimental, but I like the British the best. But all of the fleets have their appeal; some specific ships get a bit too modern-y for my tastes but others in the same fleet are just perfect.

I also have some of the old Space 1889 Martian ships to throw in later.

Captain Gideon16 Aug 2016 2:42 p.m. PST

Sounds interesting for myself I like the Japanese and the French more than other Fleets.

From what I heard the Spanish Fleet will be done before the end of the year and I'm very glad that they're doing that Fleet.

I still have a couple of the Space 1889 ships which I put in my German Fleet as Airships.

As you have done I've also switched some ships from one Fleet to the other for example I added 2 French Battlecruisers to the Russian's to bolster their Fleet since at the moment the Russian's have only 1 Capital ship but that's going to change soon.

tulsatime16 Aug 2016 3:20 p.m. PST

I have the rulebook from the KS, currently reading it and have a small number of unpainted Brigade Models Aeronef models, mostly Japanese and American, want to do a Pacific War game.

DontFearDareaper Fezian16 Aug 2016 4:19 p.m. PST

I have a friend who got the rulebook from the Kickstarter. I am really looking forward to giving it a try.

My Turkish Aeronef fleet is anxious to take to the skies again:

Captain Gideon16 Aug 2016 4:34 p.m. PST

I like the paint job of your Turkish Fleet it's a very interesting look for them.

Is the Turks your only Fleet?

If anyone would like to some of my Aeronef ships please email me at yamamoto87@hotmail.com and I'll be glad to send you pictures.

Michael

DontFearDareaper Fezian16 Aug 2016 10:43 p.m. PST

The Turks are my only fleet at the moment, but that could easily change if our group likes Imperial Skies. evil grin

MacrossMartin17 Aug 2016 3:35 a.m. PST

I rather like the idea of setting an Aeronef game during the American Civil War. I'd prefer to do so with large-ish, detailed models, but few in number, with a bit more focus on the operation of each craft. Altitude rules would be a must.

Would Imperial Skies work for that, or might I be better off modding Full Thrust or similar?

Captain Gideon17 Aug 2016 7:16 a.m. PST

MacrossMartin In Imperial Skies and the earlier rules Aeronef there were no real flying vessels until the early 1870's so I don't think they'll work for ACW.

Now if you were doing ground combat there are Land Ironclads which were used during the ACW and the rules are called Land Ironclads which are linked to AERONEF.

Trying to find a place to buy these is amazingly difficult.

DontFearDareaper Fezian17 Aug 2016 9:26 a.m. PST

I don't think they are on the market yet Mark. The folks I know who have a copy participated in the Kickstarter and those copies were only recently shipped out.

Captain Gideon17 Aug 2016 10:10 a.m. PST

I think once all the people who participated in the KS gets their copy of Imperial Skies the rest of the people will get their chance to buy the rules maybe thru Brigade or some other retailers.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP17 Aug 2016 12:29 p.m. PST

…so I don't think they'll work for ACW.

I tend to disagree; while the fluff suggests otherwise, I'm sure you could fly them the way you wish. Actually, my last Aeornef game had the GB and German ships battling in support of surface units of the North and the South.

Though, it was twenty years after the 'official' end of the ACW. ;->=

More an issue would be altitude; I'm still working through IS movement and combat, so not the right one to speak.

However, I thought more-than-vague altitude rules were in development. *shrug*

However, you can pretty much say the same for Aeronef and Leviathans.

I backed the KS and am eagerly awaiting my copy of the rules. I'd be all for running a game or two at the local shop to generate some buzz. I wonder if Robin could be coaxed in to making a "Demo Day" kit of some kind. I'm thinking a downloadable kit with an 8.5"x11" event poster (the rulebook cover art with space to enter date, time, etc), a Quick Reference Quide handout for players, perhaps a couple of the exploded view ship drawings from the rulebook for decorative eye candy, finally a sell sheet of some kind showcasing the rulebook, accessories, etc (naturally with a "talk to your local store today" blurb to keep the orders local and help support the venue).

EnclavedMicrostate18 Aug 2016 9:57 a.m. PST

Rules are shipping soon, and I'm simply giddy with excitement. The K.u.K. Luftmarine is going to see a lot more action in the months to come…

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP21 Aug 2016 10:15 a.m. PST

…although in my setting, some of the 'nef aren't operated by their "official" nation…

Besides my 'extended ACW/WBtS', I noticed in a small group of ships I purchased, painted, from a fellow, parts had been interchanged, tails from Michigan and old model Formitable(Fr) in particular, and, I spun a yarn that they were damaged hulks in a distant US station, taken over by a native insurrection. Of course, in desperation, ships were made ready, even if cannibalized.

Suddenly, it was the nascent fleet of the newly independent Hawaii. ;->=

…but I'm getting a set of the turning gauges as part of the KS.

Likewise, your grace, but even some paper ones help in working out the rules, in the mean time.

Canuckinator: With, as far as I know, one seller of ships in North America, and no distributor, how can that help the store?

Doug

Canuckinator21 Aug 2016 5:54 p.m. PST

A valid point Doug – NA distribution may be a problem. :(

We may face the chicken vs the egg scenario. How can one generate local interest if one cannot source locally? Now that's not to say ordering direct is out of the question, I just know some of my local game stores are a bit less "hospitable" when it comes to showcasing something they do not, will not or cannot stock. Naturally YMMV depending on the temperance of your FLGS and if you're not playing at a store it's a moot point entirely.

But I may be putting the cart before the horse at this stage anyway. I've been guilty of over thinking before. :)

Captain Gideon22 Aug 2016 7:12 a.m. PST

Canuckinator at least you still have some local game stores in San Francisco there's exactly 1 but to be fair there's still several in the general Bay Area.

The way I see it the only way people can experience Imperial Skies might be at Gaming Conventions and then if they like the game get them to buy from Brigade themselves.

When I ran some AERONEF games 2 years ago some people didn't know what it was but a few knew right away what it was.

For myself I plan on running some Imperial Skies games next year at least that's my plan but first I need to get myself into reading the rules and then doing a game with my friends.

Canuckinator23 Aug 2016 3:25 p.m. PST

I should consider myself spoiled Gideon. I've got three gaming stores within easy driving distance. The problem is that they're all dominated by GW and Magic The Gathering. Not my cup of tea…

Back to my original point – I wonder if Robin would be up for posting some peripheral material so that fans of the game could share the love at whatever venue they happen to be demoing at.

Captain Gideon24 Aug 2016 8:14 a.m. PST

Canuckinator I remember a game store in Oakland CA I think it was called Art of War or something like that anyway the owner said he wanted to be a different type of game store and said that if he didn't have it in stock he would special order it for you.

And the store had a good selection of Historical minis and books,Sci-Fi and other stuff so for awhile it was pretty good.

And then the owner got the Warhammer 40K bug and got rid of all the historical stuff and other things and focused on that mostly.

So he turned his back on most of the wargamers out there and catered to a few.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2016 6:16 a.m. PST

Sorry for coming back to the topic late.

Canuck: I AM the local game store. ;->=

Well, partner in same…

Still, I support and play games that may never make it to the store shelves and wall pegs. Please don't take my question as too pointed.

At various times we've been 'dominated' by 40K or FoW or…, though we've always known 'all-in-one-basket' can't last forever.
