Well I was watching a youtube video of a medieval game, 100 years war it was… lots of dice for "activation".

French knights one side, English on foot on the other side.

The dice are rolled and allocated a little bit of calculation with those dice.

The English archers roll badly; unable to move, plant wooden stakes, or shoot, they are charged by the French knights who rolled some good dice.

No contest, some English archers are missing their fingers, but many more are beyond caring!

What were those rules called ?

Surely they were French!

Sword & Spear uses dice activation. Each player has a die color, and one die for each unit goes into a bag. Somebody blind draws seven die out, and they are given to the respective players to activate their units.

And there's more to it than that, but does that sound right so far?

My figures are mounted for DBA. What is the minimum number of stands I'd need to field a Sword and Spear army?

A typical army is around 10-15 units. Units can be whatever frontage you choose, as long as both sides have the same frontage. You could use one DBA base as a unit, but what most people do is use 4 DBA bases as a unit (i.e. 80mm frontage units if playing in 15mm).
