I was wondering if any of the submariners in the group include underwater physical features in their games? I am thinking of course of the (fictional?) Thor''s Twins in Hunt for Red October.

I was thinking that such might be good if using 1/3000 models, rather than 1/700.

Any thoughts?

Yes, and with 1/700 to boot :)

Any pics?

I know you are writing your own set of rules: are there any others you have tried in the meantime? I am thinking of using SnapShot: have you tried them?

Give Snapshot a spin, they are pretty good

Thanks.
Will do.

Well, thermoclines *need* to be included.

If you mean things like seamounts, most of them don't come close enough to the surface to matter. Unless you're the USS San Francisco, or that Whiskey-class, anyway.

In the Pacific, Crush Depth for modern subs is about 2-3 miles from the beach, and the water is VERY deep otherwise. Lots of 2000+ fathom ocean out there, and even some 3000+ fathom. Crush Depth for WW2 subs is about a mile from the beach!

In a realistic game, I wouldn't include anything aside from the thermocline or similar hydrographical features.

For a 'sub opera' game, I'd throw in all kinds of things – rocks, reefs, shipwrecks, stations, etc.

What about whales?

Once noisy things like active sonar or torpedoes start happening, whales and schools of fish are going to leave the area as fast as they can swim.

So no amorous short-sighted whales mistaking a sub for a lady whale? That would quite an Event Card to throw into the mix in a game!

No, that kind of thing happens when the subs are going quiet.

I've had humpback whales audible through the hull for hours, all sorts of fish noises as we pump sanitary tanks overboard, and even a torpedo tube full of shrimp once!
