Hi all, Simple question: was it paved? Some punters seem to paved the courtyard when building their models. Others have not. Just wondering which it is.. historically speaking. Cheers and thanks |

I believe that it was paved with cobbles but there was a small pond in one corner and a midden. Therefore it would be slathered in mud. I would model it as primarily mud with a few cobbles showing through. |

This thread has a couple pics of the interior cobbles: TMP link |

Cobbles it is. Though I think Artilleryman makes a good point about muddying things up. I might do a bit of that too :) |

Being a farm I imagine it was more than just mud… SO lots of "straw" required |

A farm yard, even then, had to be able to take carts in any weather, in any season. That great barn took some filling from all the neighbouring fields and every day many a cart was in and out, through the great gate and across that small space. Cobbles were not an affectation. They were a necessity, long before 1815. Nothing elegant, but certainly not bare earth either. Even the ultimate source here no help; PDF link Same applies for Hgmnt even for earliest photos. Cobbles I cannot find any for LHS interior until end of 19th C. |

Nice little link that Deadhead. I'm waiting for my paving to arrive (being too lazy to scratch build it). I suspect there won't be enough to cover the entire courtyard so I'll have some muddy areas where the most traffic would have been … and also some straw about the place as suggested by Marc. |
