Yes, I know that the official answer would be 'a smoking hole in the ground', but as we're using FWC and not Ogre Miniatures…

…what kind of aircraft minis do you think have an 'Ogre-verse' aesthetic?

(I have to admit, I'm not even sure what that is, but some things come to mind – kinda-sorta 70s/80s scifi, 'slab sided', VTOL…more ideas?)

While we're going to be using 6mm minis, I'm not wedded to that as a source, as long as it works with 6mm.

Actually, back in the day, wasn't there an article in Space Gamer for a flying OGRE?

nvdoyle10 Aug 2016 8:59 p.m. PST

Yep – the Continental Siege Aircraft. :) It had other aircraft rules, too – one of many gems to appear in that mag.

Ideally, '50's era what-if designs.

I think this means we're old. grin

nvdoyle10 Aug 2016 10:24 p.m. PST

It does. :) But I did read them in the Ogre Book, the first one…

Skippy0001, are there any particular minis you'd suggest in that vein? B-58 Hustler is coming to mind…

Big beefy flying wings.

Any of these might be modified into an Ogre

Something with a super-curvy 70s vibe. Think B-1, but even curvier. There are various aircraft proposals from the period to look at.

I think VTOLs are the way to think about aircraft in the OGREverse. The Laser towers and small nukes can knock down any flying things very easily. The small VTOLs can hug the ground, get cover and fly under the radar. That's what I use.

Allen57 – wow! Got any links for those?

Also, it doesn't have to be a flying Ogre, just a flying vehicle that fits the broader aesthetic. Which given the various sculpts, is pretty broad…

Didn't think or I would have included the links. All are eBay auctions although The Conan and Evangelion kits were available through Hobby Link Japan. A good company to do business with.

Lord, a FLYING OGRE?!?! The mind reels as it boggles…

That could make for a brilliant game though. I'd love to see that as a dieselpunk-themed or Luftwaffe what-if scenario…

Yes, a giant Nazi super-fortress saucer, launching on one last, mad, toss of the dice, blackening out the skies as it lumbers towards London… deep in its armoured belly, the only German A-Bomb sits primed and ready!

But, pilots of the 352nd Fighter Group, winging their way home after another successful escort mission, spy the behemoth over France, and streak down to intercept, while rocket-powered Me163's leap from the saucer's launch rails, on suicidal missions to ensure nothing interferes with the ultimate Vergeltungswaffen's destiny!

Back to the actual question…

Wouldn't aircraft in OGRE have the same issues as vehicles? Namely, the need to resist the effects of nuclear weapons that are shot about the place with callous disregard?

I'd think the aircraft would be flying bricks, laden with armour and shielding, staying airborne on thrust more than aerodynamics. The aesthetic of 40K Imperial aircraft comes to mind, especially the early Epic metal releases. I can see the early Thunderhawk dropship as a bomber in OGRE.

I was at the Wright-Patterson museum last month and the YB-70 impressed the hell out of me, maybe something like that with NOE capabilities (so wildly unrealistic but this is Ogre) and stealth, and a ton of supersonic air-to-ground missiles to fire.

I'm modifying a 1/144 F-117 into a CSA. Keeps the angular lines of the OGRE tanks, with the addition of some of the aspects of Speed's old illustrations (like big honking underslung engines).

The old MicroMachines X-Men Blackbird makes a good futuristic smaller aircraft:

As does the MicroMachines Aurora:

And the MicroMachines TR-3A:

Along those lines, the MicroMachines Sea Shadow makes an interesting naval asset for OGRE:

Just some food for thought.

Some of the VTOLs from MechWarrior Clix might work.
