Sorry about that title. I meant, what is the most "iconic" work of art that is military or war themed? Please include a picture.

Unless we include music as a work of art, in which case it's Goldsmith's "Patton" theme, and I'll guarantee I can't post a picture.

I'm with Texas Jack. Not realistic but a great painting, especially having seen the original.

I thought of that too, maybe not the most iconic but certainly one of the most poignant.

Not the most iconic, but worth sharing here, since it's undeservedly obscure and the original is in a private collection and not available to the public. Leonidas' last stand at Thermopylae by Louis Glanzman.

The picture on VJ day of the sailor kissing the girl on the dock at the close of the war. If you don't have it in your head already, there's no hope.

It's a once in a millennia picture and says everything about war, and joy and relief and life.

CeruLucifus10 Aug 2016 8:44 p.m. PST

Can't decide between Iwa Jima Memorial and picture of sailor kissing nurse.

I think it's the "iron Mike" or "follow me" statue pose.

picture

This basic pose has been copied many times by many services in many countries. It is the iconic pose of leadership by example under fire.

I had a tactical officer who won the silver star on a hot LZ in Vietnam. Everyone was pinned down, and he knew he had to get his men off the LZ. He also knew the VC were going to shoot the first person who stood up. Still he got to his feet under heavy fire, assumed the "follow me" pose, led his men to safety, and cleared the LZ for follow-on forces. Miraculously he survived the fight.

Well, I think with all these excellent suggestions it's time for a poll! Let the games begin!

Cheers.
