It looks like Osprey's fantasy/horror rulebook "Broken Legions" ( link ) is now at the top of the queue for getting published and is due out in a couple of weeks. I'm intrigued by both the idea of small scale (8-15 figures per side) classical period games and the addition of fantasy to the setting, and while I'll look at the rules themselves first, I also have Advanced Songs of Blades and Heroes as a backup plan.

So I'm thinking I'd look at late Republican/Marian/Caesarian Romans to start with and after checking out some of the ranges online, I wanted to see what other people thought might be a good 15mm range for skirmish gaming.

Some of my criteria would be:
- range of poses
- "character" (sort of tied into the above)
- skirmish-sized packs (I don't need an army deal here)
- either completeness of the range in terms of opponents or compatibility with other makers

On the last point, some of their opponents would be my Splintered Light Picts and undead Egyptians, so I'm probably looking at things at the "true" or small end of the 15-18mm spectrum. I would want some Celts/Germans/Dacians at some point too.

I also see myself getting maybe a warband for early/mid Imperial and then late Imperial, but that's for another day.

In my searches, Forged in Battle has some really neat stuff – I like the slave soldiers in Roman kit pack as sort of a Dirty Dozen for the setting – but they come in pretty big packs. To get a mix of gladius and pilum-armed figures I'd need two separate packs and would have 48 figures in the end, when I'd only really maybe need 20 of them. Ditto for some Germanic warbands.

Magister Militum looks like the packs all come with one pose, but at least you can get small packs to build up to a warband. Other ideas are welcome too.

Thanks,
Chris

I'd suggest Peter Pig but they are Early Imperial.

Small packs, lots of variety, plenty of character and there are German and Parthians in the range too.

If you can manage to find any Corvus Belli ones they are lovely, recently out of production but some stores still have some.

For Republican Xyston might fit the bill. They are on the large side, or so I have heard, But they come in small packs.

You could try these from QRF – some variety in each pack.

If you are not in a hurry you could wait for the Copplestone Barbarica romans to come out.
We have been waiting for a few years now but since North Star have took over production of his range there have been some promising announcments that things are starting to happen.

Thanks for the suggestions, I hadn't looked at Peter Pig. I don't think Xyston will work if they're as big as rumoured, they'll probably dwarf the SLM stuff I want to use as well. I have an eye on the Copplestone stuff too (I have much of the rest of the line), but it'll depend on whether these are historical Romans or a fantasy take (as the Battle Valor Legians are); also they're a bit tall. But thanks again all, off to look at Peter Pig.

The new Baueda range looks as though it's going to be huge – should be able to find some gems in there. Anyway, why not mix and match ranges for individuality?

Are Baueda compatible with Peter Pig? And are either or both compatible with splintered Light?

Thanks.

I really like the Chariot range of figures. Problem is not a good range of poses, but what do you expect in a unit of Romans. They are not Gauls, running this way and that.
