I gather there were such used in Europe but generally more hex or octagonal than square sided. A very recognisably Patrice Courcelle work shows use in Spain;
My only complaint would be that this looks totally impregnable. OK, a ruse de guerre might convince the commander that there is now a truce and the war is over so please open etc……….. |

I am really glad you like my redoubt. As concerns "impregnable" – just remember Fort Ticonteroga: it was taken by the Green Mountain Boys and other state militia (!) under the command of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold in a surprise attack. Note: No fortification helps against unawareness of its garrison. At Yorktown a redoubt like this was taken by the Americans in a night attack. It had a dry ditch though. |

Oh I can well imagine that a few howitzers could make short work of it. Wood burns nicely. But I would not fancy a direct assault………. I love the way you have built it in sections. Indeed anything scratch built appeals to me! This is great. |

Deadhead, Just for the record, the very beautifull plate of the gendarmerie outpost you posted, is not by P. Courcelle (who has made many extaordinary plates but not this one) but by Jack Girbal and published in F.G. Hourtoulle's book L'epopee Napoleonienne. |

Very nice work. I am sure it looks good on a gaming table and surely will be hard to assault or to conquer. |

and it was so typical of PC's style……….but now you mention it, I have looked up Jack Girbal and seen his other work is just as good. It is a great piece of artwork and I just hope he does not read this forum! Thanks for pointing this out, as it did lead me to look further! |

Reminds me of Yorktown and there is a simpler one in Valley Forge |

That would be easy to take. Either: 1. Tell a dozen squaddies that Wolfgang's bratty van is parked up inside. or: 2. Tell half a dozen Royals that the building is a pub with a free bar for the next 30 minutes only. Job done. |
