I'm just curious. How many cavalry figures do you have painted and based? Do you feel you have enough? Are they too much to paint, seeing as you need the mounted figures, and then dismounted ones? How often do you use them? I myself only have one 4-regiment brigade of rebel cavalry, and one regiment of Union. I have enough unpainted Union cavalry for 5 more regiments (I was going to do the Lightning Brigade at Chickamauga). Since its based for JR2, that would be 70 figures for the Confederates (two 20 fig regiments and two 15 fig regiments), and a 20 fig regiment for the Union. All have their dismounted counterparts and horseholders. I was curious how others use cavalry, how many they have painted, and how often they actually use them in games. To be honest, I don't use mine very much. |

I have 16 Union mounted cavalry and about 50 dismounted, not counting horse holders. That's because Battle Honors come packed that way. The cavalry get used when the historical scenario calls for them. Some appear in first Bull Run, a number in the Wilderness, none in Champion Hill. We play grand tactical rules, each unit a brigade or division. I have loads of napoleonic and Seven years war cavalry. |

I have about 200 mounted and 200 dismounted for each side. These are 15mm armies. |

I have enough to recreate Brandy Station at a 20/1 ratio. Great fun except I had food poisoning and was utterly miserable the whole game. |

60 or so mounted, roughly the same in dismounts. That is per side |

20mm size – CSA 46 mounted and 40 dismounted in 4 regiments. USA 40 mounted and 36 dismounted in 3 regiments. Command stands remain mounted. |
DisasterWargamer | 05 Aug 2016 9:06 p.m. PST |
About 40 mtd and 50 dismtd for both sides – another 30 mtd or so for each side to paint – No horse holders |

Interesting question! So my group recently picked 28mm ACW, and I could not have been happier. ACW needs lots of foot, very very few mounted mounted models. So I painted up 5 regiments of federal infantry, and 5 regiments of Rebs, and thas it- NO mounted! And very happy about that. |

My collection is 15mm and I've been building towards doing some of the larger cavalry actions. So I have around 150 Union and 120 Confederate figures painted and with dismounts for all. Heaven only knows how many unpainted. We don't play a lot of ACW so if I use them all before 2018 I'll be pleased. |

At 20 – 1 and in 15mm I can do the cavalry corp of the Army of the Potomac in 1864 and Stuart/Hampton corp in the same year. Mounted and dis mounted. Artilery attached. Its more than I need but way less then what I want. I must go its time for my medications. H |

None. I had some smallish units and never used them so they got sold off. I focus more on the infantry battles, which are the main actions for the ACW. |
CATenWolde | 06 Aug 2016 8:14 a.m. PST |
Union: 26 mounted stands (2 figs each), 22 dismounted stands(3 figs each), 4 horse holders. CSA: 52 mounted stands, 45 dismounted stands, 6 horse holders. These were for the early western theatre battles, so lots more CSA cavalry and mounted infantry. |
Trajanus | 06 Aug 2016 8:40 a.m. PST |
60 Union mounted 28mm with 25% less for dismounted as per regulations and horse holders to match. To be honest they have yet to be used as we started playing Longstreet just after they were finished and I refuse to use them in the size of game that's supposed to represent. I know it says you can in the rules but that's a rubbish excuse to have all three arms on the table. Perfectly fine game without them. If we ever get back to playing larger games with some other rules they might even get a run out one day. |

Why are you buying cavalry figures? This is ACW, buy more infantry! |

About two divisions on a side mounted for Johnny Reb. Cannot remember using more than one brigade at a time. Doug Kline ran a cavalry fight at a Johnny Con a few years back. I am custodian for three players which explains why I have so many. |
John the Greater | 08 Aug 2016 7:06 a.m. PST |
I have about 40 Union mounted with the same for the dismounted and about 30 Confederate mounted plus the same dismounted. We do primarily Fire & Fury and this is enough for most battles. |
bobm1959 | 12 Aug 2016 4:02 p.m. PST |
I have a fair few for both sides. Some mounted some on foot. The rules don't differentiate as their assumed to be in whatever is the best formation for whatever they're up to. |
ACWBill | 12 Aug 2016 4:39 p.m. PST |
Hundreds on each side, more than I really need. However, I will probably paint more, just because I like them and I can. |
uglyfatbloke | 13 Aug 2016 12:26 p.m. PST |
I've got about 80 and SWMBO has about 100 Confederates. We just add horse-holder bases to indicate that the unit has dismounted. |
ConfederateSwede | 13 Aug 2016 1:49 p.m. PST |
I have many maybe around 70 of the italeri 1/72 troopers. I so regret painting them and all the effort that went into it because there's no use for them…. |

Using my own rules 'Give them the cold steel' 1figure = 40men and 1gun model = 8guns I have the 15mm figures to represent both the ANV and the army of the Potomac on the eve of the battle of Gettysburg. Come to think I have bands, hospitals loads of wagons and various odds and sods. Still have loads to paint, think I have enough. Next project ancient Etruscan, Roman and Greek armies in 28mm Plastic, now that is a change! |
