And do you have both mounted and dismounted for any given unit – and all painted or not yet? Pretty simple inquiry. And any comments about how you use them in games are okay to toss in to the mix. |
DisasterWargamer | 04 Aug 2016 8:48 p.m. PST |
I went overboard and did way too many units of Cav in 15mm – most of them have dismounted as well – all but a few painted. Just try to vary them a bit in scenarios as to which unit was in the Northern or Southern Campaigns. |
Doctor X | 04 Aug 2016 9:10 p.m. PST |
British light dragoons, Queens Rangers, and Emmerichs Chasseurs. Both mounted and dismounted. |
Bandolier | 04 Aug 2016 9:31 p.m. PST |
8 units in 28mm. Allows plenty of flexibility. 4 of Continental light dragoons (plus 2 dismounted versions) 1 of mounted militia (can use any militia dismounted) 2 of British light dragoons (1 dismounted – 16th, I think) 1 of Queens Rangers All painted and all veterans. Only use 3-4 at most per game. |

All in 25/28mm. On the Bad Guy side: 17th Light Dragoons British Legion Queen's Rangers Hussars (all 2 of them!) Magua's Own Chevaux Legere Good Guys: The guys with white coats and sky blue facings The guys with brown coats and green facings Lee's Legion cleverly disguised as British Legion Philadelphia Light Horse Militia Stumblebums Pulaski's Legion Lauzun's Legion As for dismounted, I have in the painting queue British Legion, Philadelphia LH, and Pulaski. I got a deal from my Firing Line Guy… Already painted are Lee's Legion in the pink/lavendar leisure suits. |

I have the above on 1"x2" bases. That works for both Age of Reason and my TSATF AWI variant. In Age of Reason, well, use them to hit disordered or broken units. In TSATF, well, they are not very big units. Use caution. However, Magua's Own have been known to strike fear in the eyes of stolid regulars, just by showing up. That's the players' own morale fail. Has nothing to do with the rules. |

You must always have two per side, lest you be unable to do Guilford. 15s are OK. Soft plastics are OK. 54's are OK, but no one wants to complete a 28mm hard plastic line. It's so much more fun to start another incomplete line instead. ARRGH!! |

One of the great money loser ideas of all time is to invest the money into tooling the metal molds for 28mm AWI hard plastic cavalry. I can think of at least 3 different body types needed. Can you see the outrage if a box of British cavalry came out, and the company held out on Yankee Cav or British a legion to see how the first one did? And then when collectors bought all they needed (one box) they abandoned the idea as a money loser. Heads would take up lots of space on the sprue. Buy metal. Only someone determined to lose money would spend thousands of dollars tooling AWI Cav. |

Well, a prize to nevinsrip, well a kudo, for actually having more units than I do. I thought I was unique in having 20 cavalry units – and all with dismounts (including the Brunswickers). Doug gets a kudo, too, but of a lesser order since he just has to pull from his own range of figures he sells but a very nice range and a very stand up gentleman from all reports. I am pleasantly surprised to see numerous others – I hope to use them to do a variety of hypothetical cavalry heavy AWI games. And in their historical roles at times, too. Though I can't imagine using cavalry in the AWI without dismounts. (Winston, without photos of Magua's own, they don't exist, you know? Get on it.) |
79thPA | 05 Aug 2016 7:32 a.m. PST |
When I had them, I had a small unit of Brits and a small unit of Continentals. |

Ha, Early morning writer, come up and see my collection sometime. Your only 45 minutes away! Maybe play in a game with us too! I have almost 2,000 40mm figures in my AWI army. |

(Winston, without photos of Magua's own, they don't exist, you know? Get on it.) My table is full now with … stuff. I have a game tomorrow night and maybe I can sneak them into Ireland. In any event, I feel challenged. Soon. |
Winston Smith | 05 Aug 2016 8:37 a.m. PST |
Seriously though… Most cavalry units had short lived, and the uniform we paint them in lasted one year. One could say "They are who I say they are" and nobody would complain. But I like to paint and collect. That's why I have far too many cavalry units than sanity would allow. |
42flanker | 05 Aug 2016 8:49 a.m. PST |
Nevinsrip, I am excited at the mention of British Light dragoons in "summer overshirts." This is something new to me (having not paid much attention to AWI cavalry, since coming into the subject sideways, so to speak). I hope it will be 'the thing learned' today. Winston. Bad guys? |
Bill N | 05 Aug 2016 9:37 a.m. PST |
At the moment I have under development the British Legion, Pulaski's Legion and the 3rd Light Dragoons. The holdup on completing Pulaski is finding a good figure for the lancers. I intend to do some 17th British Light Dragoons as well, but cannot decide whether to do them in summer or winter clothing. I also intend to do some 1st Light Dragoons and some militia horse so that I can cover or at least fake the actions in the southern campaign. |

I have Continental and British/Tory cavalry in 28mm and 15mm. Enough to cover just about any unit, although I have only painted enough in 28mm to do Cowpens so far. I have some dismounts, but not many. |
GROSSMAN | 05 Aug 2016 7:50 p.m. PST |
I had about 30 and sold them off, didn't really fell they added much to the games, just another layer of rules. They had very little impact on the battlefield IMHO and seemed to be used in more abstract ways than to put them out on a table. |
